MERRILL. The judicial seat of Lin- coln county, is a prosperous and rapidly increasing incorporated city, advantageous- ly located on the Wisconsin river and on the C., M. & St. P. Ry, in the southern part of the county, 170 miles (air line) northwest of Milwaukee, and 18 north of Wausau. It contains 8 large saw mills, 9 planing mills, 3 sash, door and blind fac- tories, large booms for the storage of logs, machine shops, a capacious city hall and public library building, a steam laundry, a four mill, an amusement hall with a seat- ing capacity of 1.000, a system of Holly water works, electric light plant and an electric street railway; S churches, first- class hotels, and the usual number of spe- cial and general stores, etc. The press is represented by 3 weekly newspapers, the Lincoln County Advocate (Rep.), the Lin- coln County Anzeiger (German) and the Northern Wisconsin News (Dem ). The


city is surrounded by an excellent hard- wood farming country, which is being rapidly developed, and there are numerous small saw mills for the manufacturing of hardwood lumber. The main industry is the lumbering interests, which are the largest on the Wisconsin river. The saw mills have a entting capacity of 175.000.000 feet during the cutting season, the lumber manufactured during the sawing season of 1890 being 150,000,000 feet, besides a cor- responding amount of shingles, lath, sash, doors and blinds, etc., which are shipped in large quantities.
