PRAIRIE DU CHIEN. This flourishing incorporated city, one of the oldest places in the State, is located on a level prairie at the foot of the Mississippi bluffs. When first visited by the French, the prairie was occupied by a tribe of the Fox Indians under command of a chief named Alein, which signifies dog, and to this circumstance the city owes its pres- ent name of La Prairie du Chien or the dog's plain. It occupies a splendid com- mercial position, the Mississippi river, the C., B. & N. Ry and the C., M. & St. P. Ry affording transportation facilities to all parts of the United States. Its Artesian mineral wells, the waters of which con- tain valuable curative properties and fur- nish the city with a comparatively cheap and never failing system of water works give the city an added attraction to visi tors, and bring hither many invalids. One of these wells gives the name to the Artes- ian stock farm, one of the largest and most complete establishments of its kind in the Northwest, comprising some 3,500 acres. Here is also located the Prairie du Chien Remedial Institute, noted for the medici- nal and curative quality of its baths. This city is the judicial seat of Crawford county, in the southwest corner of which it is situ- ated, 194 miles west of Milwaukee and 33 north west of Lancaster. Incorporated in 1873,it now contains a grain elevator, bank. saw and flour mills, a soap factory, a vinegar
