RACINE. The judicial scat of Racine county, is an important and rapidly in- creasing manufacturing city, advantage- tageously located on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of Root river, and on the C. & N. W. and the C., M. & St. P. Rys, 62 miles northwest of Chicago, 25 southeast of Milwaukec, 107 southeast of Madison. It was settled in 1834 by Capt. Gilbert Knapp, and incorporated in 1848. A daily line of steamers land passengers and freight here, and touch at all lake ports north and south. The educational facilities are of a superior order, and the city is becoming notably prominent for the liberal and care- ful manner in which such matters are sup- ported and maintained. Besides a thorough public school system, there is a college and several academies and private schools. The different religious denominations are numerously represented, and the majority possess handsome and imposing places of worship. The city is lighted by electricity and gas, has 3 national banks, large, com- modious and handsome business blocks and elegant private residences, a well equipped and efficient fire department, an excellent system of water works, good hotels, telephone exchange, and all the facilities and appointments of a modern commercial metropolis. The most im- portant interests of the city are its mannfactories. There are sash, door and blind factories, iron foundries, farm implement manufactories, boiler works, box. soap, basket, carriage and wagon.
