MANITOWOC. The judicial seat of Manitowoc county, has a picturesque and commercial location seldom combined or cxcelled. Located in a rich farming sec- tion, on the shore of Lake Michigan, at the crossing of the M., L. S. & W. Ry over the Manitowoc river, it has a harbor a mile in length, improved and lengthened by two parallel piers 250 feet apart and 2,470 feet long, built by the United States goveru- ment at a cost of $375,000. With such a harbor, open through the year, vessel trade with the ports to the south is never inter- rupted, and during the winter season Manitowoc is recognized as one of the best ship yard cities on Lake Michi- gan. Incorporated as a city in 1870. it has had a steady growth, and now contains 7,564 inhabitants, holders of assessed property to the value of $1,900- 000, bonded by the city for $35,000. The industries of the city are varied and exien- sive, but the possibilities are far from being reached. The city contains 2 ship yards, an excellent dry dock, and a floating dock, 3 breweries, 10 cigar factories, the Ensilage Machinery Manufacturing Co .. extensive iron works, several wagon factories, a coal dock with a capacity of 100,000 tons, an edged tool manufacturing company, 1 large paper and cigar box fac- tory, 3 flouring mills, 4 tauneries, the Mani- towoc Manufacturing Co., a large estab- lishment manufacturing school, church and office furniture and employing 150 hands, the only glue factory in the State. vinegar works, 3 planing mills, a saw mill, 6 brick yards, 4 hay presses, representing an output of $ 000 tons pressed hay in 1899 There are 3 banks and 3 first class hotels, while a high school of 10 depart ments, 2 ward schools and several sectarian schools give the city a well marked rept- tation in educational matters. The vari- ous religious denominations are represent ed by 12 churches. The city also con- tains the spacious county insane asylum. and the Polish Orphan Asylum, which cost $15,000. Four newspapers-English, Ger- man and Polish-are publishel The shipments constitute large quantities of
