It is an important station ou the C. & N. W. Ry, the C., M. & St. P. Ry, the M., L. S. & W. Ry and the Wis- consin Central Line, which, with their connections, afford unsurpassed transpor- tation facilities to all parts of the United States. The United States government has im- proved the navigation in the Lower Fox by dams and locks, so that boats of 300 tons burden, and drawing between 5 and 6 feet of water, can easily reach Oshkosh from Green Bay, and a large amount of freight and merchandise for the interior is shipped by water through the great lakes and up the Fox improvement, which has become an important point of transhipment. The Wolf river empties into the ... Upper Fox, 10 miles above Oshkosh, and many million feet of logs are annually floated down to the city, and are here cut up and manufactured. The press is rep- resented by the Northwestern (daily and weekly), the Times (daily and weekly), the Sun (daily), the Signal (weekly), the Chief (weekly), and the Wisconsin Telegraph (weekly). Several first-class hotels cater to the wants of the traveling public. Yacht- ing is one of the great features on Lake Winnebago, and the annual regattas are largely attended. This place is a favorite resort for sportsmen during the period when wild duck and teal are in season, while bass, pickerel and pike are found here in large quantities. The educational facilities are of a superior order, the school buildings are among the finest in the State, a State normal school being located here, and the city is becoming notably promi- nent for the liberal and careful manner in which such matters are supported and maintained. The city contains 5 banks. The different religious denominations are numerously represented, and the majority possess handsome and imposing places of worship. The city is lighted by electricity and gas, has Nicholson pavement ou the principal streets, has a splendid system of sewerage, the Holly system of water works, 30 miles of main pipes, a well equipped and efficient fire department, telephone exchange and all the facilities and re- quisites of a modern metropolitan city: A new government building has been erected at a cost of $100,000 The residence por- tion is well wooded with mammoth oaks and maples, and contains numerous, elegant and costly dwellings.
