STEVENS' POINT. The judicial seat of Portage connty, is a flourishing, important and progressive city, advantag- eously located on both banks of the Wis- consin river and on the Wisconsin Central Line and the G. B., W. & St. P. R. R., 158 miles northwest of Milwaukee. Lum- bering is the principal industry, the city being located at the base of the upper Wisconsin pineries, as well as those on the headwaters of the Chippewa, Black and Flambeau rivers. The city contains Bap- tist, Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Metho- dist and Presbyterian churches, a large public library, high and graded schools. two of which were completed at a cost of $10,000 and $15,000 respectively, 2 banks, saw mills, planing mills, sash, door and blind factories, foundries and machine shops, shingle mills, large flouring and feed mills, boiler factories, and numerous large and commodions business blocks and handsome residences. The extensive machine, car, blacksmith and paint shops of the Wisconsin Central Line, located here, give employment to a large number of workmen. The press is represented by three weekly newspapers, The Gazette, The Journal and the Wisconsin Pinery. It is lighted by gas and electricity, has a well (quipped fire department, an efficient po- lice force, first-class hotels, telephone exchange and all the appointments and facilities of a metropolitan city. Its

natural water power is surpassed by but few places in the West, and special induce- ments are offered to persons who will start any manufacturing industry. Exp., N. P. and U. S. Tel., W. U. Population, 9,000. E. McGlachlin, postmaster.
