SPARTA. Dating its settlement from 1851 and incorporated in 1883, is a thriv- Ing city in Monroe county, of which it is the judicial scat. It is romantically situ- ated in a fertile valley, near the head waters of La Crosse river, on the lines of the C., M. && St. P. and C. & N. W. Rys, and is an important station of both roads. 25 miles from the Mississippi river, 26 from La Crosse, 109 from Madison, and 107 from Milwaukee. It contains a paper mill and 2 flouring mills, operated by power furnished by the river, a sash and door factory, a foundry, 7 churches- Methodist, Congregational, Baptist, Catho- lic, Adventist, Lutheran and Norwegian Lutheran-a graded school, two opera houses, two banks and a public library of 2,000 volumes. The State School for De- pendent Children is located here. The city has a paid fire department. Three weekly newspapers, the Herald, Monroe County Democrat and Independent are pub- lished, and live stock, grain, country pro-
duce and dairy products are shipped. Sparta is noted as a watering place, its superior accommodations and the quality of its mineral waters, making it one of the most popular in the northwest.
