MARIETTA. Lincoln county. See Irma.
MARINETTE. A prosperous and steadily increasing city of 12,000 inhabi- tants, located at the mouth of the Menomi- nec river, on the shore of Green Bay, in Mar- inette county, of which it is the judicial seat. It is opposite the city of Menominee, Mich., with which it is connected by rail- way and wagon bridges and street railway. The river is navigable for heavy draught vessels 2 miles from its month and has along its banks 10 large saw mills with a daily cutting capacity of 2,000,000 feet of lumber. Its waters are controlled by a sys- tem of dams that places the water power second to none in the Northwest. This mag- nificent water power and the almost unlim- ited forests of pine, hemlock, maple, ash, basswood, rock elm, etc., that abound in the vicinity, makes this city a formidable competitor for second place in population in the State during the next decade. The railroad facilities are good, the C. & N. W. Ry and the M. & N. R R., both hav- ing commodious depots, with a network of side tracks to accommodate every mill. The city contains Presbyterian, Methodist, Episcopal, Lutheran, Catholic, Norwegian, Swedish, German and Baptist churches, 5 large graded public schools employing 32 teachers, an academy, a handsome, com. modious and well appointed court house, erected at a cost of $30,000, a town hall, 2 opera houses, 2 national banks, flour, paper and pulp mills, the Marinette Iron Works, the most extensive plant of the kind in the State, and numerous elegant and well stocked special and general stores, etc. The city is lighted by gas and elec. tricity, has a well equipped aud efficient fire department and a complete system of water works. The press is represented by the Eagle, the North Star, the Argus, the Voice of Labor, the Epworth Sun and the Pioneer Presbyterian. Land in the imme- diate vicinity ranges in price from $25 to $100 per acre. Assessed valuation of real and personal property, $3,600,000. Stages to Cedar River. Tel., W. U. and Postal- Tel. Exp., Am. Mail, daily. Lewis S. Patrick, postmaster.
