OCONOMOWOC. On river of same name, is a pleasantly located incorporated city in the northwestern part of Waukesha county, on the C., St. P. && M. short line of the C., M. & St. P. Ry, 31 miles north- west of Milwaukee, 111 northwest of Chi- cago, and 18 northwest of Waukesha, the county scat. It is in the very midst of the famous lake region, and its beantiful walks and drives, excellent hoating and fishing facilities, and the very best hotel accom- modations have made it one of the most popular summer resorts in the State. It has several mineral springs, and a firm is shipping water in a carbonated state all over the country. There are two sanitariums, a private and 2 public schools, churches representing the leading religious denomi- nations, a bank, a public library, a hall, with a seating capacity of 150, flour and planing mills, an efficient fire department, good substantial business blocks, and the usual number of minor industries for a place of its size. The press is represented by the l'le consin. Free Press (Ind.), and the Ocenmwo. wroc Democrat. OCONTO. The judicial seat of Ocon- to county is a prosperous, incorporated city, advantageously located on Green bny, at the mouth of Oconto river and on the C. & N. W., the M., L. S. & W., and the M. & N. Rys, 157 miles north of Milwaukee. Within the past four years the city has enjoyed a rapid growth, and business interests of all kinds have devel oped in an unprecedented degree. There are Catholic, Episcopal, Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian churches, 5 public grad- ed schools, a convent, 2 Catholic parochial
schools, 1 Lutheran parochial school, a National bank, a $20,000 city hall, 3 pub- lic halls each capable of seating 500; an armory hall which will seat 1,000 people; a public library with 2000 volumes, & commodious court house, 5 saw mills 3 planing mills, flour, shingle and mills, a large brewery, a barb wire spool factory, 3 wagon and sleigh manufactor- ies, numerous large and well-stocked special and general stores, while the minor branches of trade and the learned profes- sions are thoroughly represented. There is an excellent system of water works, and a well equipped and efficient paid fire department. The city is lighted
by incandescent electric lights, and the electricity is supplied from one of the best plants in the State. Three news- papers, the Enquirer, the Lumberman and the Oconto County Reporter are pub- lished, and are ably edited and progres- sive sheets, enjoying a good circulation in Oconto and adjoining counties. A furniture factory and shoc factory have each secured building sites in the city and will be in operation during the sum- mer of 1891. The fish trade is a very im- portant industry, the exports amounting to over 10,000 barrels annually. Lumber is the principal shipment. Tel., W. U. and Chi. Postal. Exp., Am. and U. S.
