R., in Sheboy- gan county, 15 miles west of Sheboygan, the judicial seat, and 52 northwest of Mil- waukce. It contains 5 churches, Catholic, German-Methodist, Congregational, Lu- theran and Episcopal, a bank, a furniture factory, 2 chair factories, 3 flouring mills, a brewery and a foundry and machine shop. Two weekly newspapers, the Re- porter and the Nordicestliche Post, are pub- lished. Cheese is extensively manufactured in the vicinity, and cheese, live stock, flour, furniture, grain and produce are shipped. It has telephone connection with surround- ing points, and a well-equipped fire de- partment, No bonded debt ; assessed valuation of real and personal property, $475,000. Population, 1.505 (U. PORTAGE. The judicial seat of Columbia county, is a prosperous city of 5,150 inhabitants, on the Wisconsin Central Line and on the C., M. & St. P. Ry, 71 miles south of Stevens' Point, 93 north- west of Milwaukee, 190 northwest of Chi- cago and 39 north of Madison. A ship canal connects the Fox aud the Wisconsin rivers at this point; it is known as the Port- age and was used by the Indians and the first voyagers to convey their canoes and batteaux from one river to the other. The city is lighted by gas and electricity, has an excellent system of water works, & volun- teer fire department, equipped with a Sils- bee engine, a chemical engine, 2 hose carts and 1 hook and ladder truck. The city contains a roller flouring mill, 2 breweries. 3 brickyards, a hosiery factory, overalls and shirt factory, blank book manufactory. a steam grist mill and 3 hanks. It has a Ane court house and jail, an opera house with a seating capacity of God, high and ward schools, churches of the Baptist. Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian Episco.
