A small plice of inconsiderable population, 10 miles from Hartwell, the county seat and nearest telegraph office; 33 miles from Bowman, the nearest railroad and express office, and 35 from Athens, the nearest banking point. Is finely situated in the center of a fine agricultural district and has a rapidly increasing population, reach- ing near about 4 500. The merchants are in an unusually prosperous condi- tion, and carry a large and varied stock of goods. It has an express office (S)thern), telegraph office (Western Union), two welt-kept ho- tels, : two wagon and carriage mannfactories, a planing mill, grist mill, three banks and sev- eral large cotton warehouses. The receipts of cotton amount to about 25,000 bales annually; in social, educational and intellectual advan- tages few towns of its siz- equal it. It has four churches, Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist and Christian. -Known also as Mauldin, is located near the Chattahoochee river, 7 n iles northwest of Clarksville, the county seat, and 123 from Mt. Airy, its near- est shipping point. Has a population of 75. Methodist and Baptist church- es, school, and grist mill run by water power furnished by the Chattaloo- chee river. Corn, bacon and flour form the principal shipments. Discontin - ved as a post-office in 1881.

ANDERSONVILLE. Cobb County.


A small place about 12 miles from Marietta, the county seat, with no postal facilities. Receives mail at Acworth.

Is a place of 150 inhabitants, situa- ted on the Sweet Water, about 4 miles west of Flint river, and 10 miles northeast of Americus, the county seat. It is the site of the once noted "Andersonville Prison," and now has one of the largest National Cemeteries in the United States, con- taining the bodies of 12, 800 soldiers. Cotton is the principal product, about 1,000 bales being shipped annually. It has a steam gin, grist and saw mill, Baptist and Methodist churches, high school with 65 pupils, and primary school. APPLING. Columbia County.


The county seat, has a population of about 125, situated on Great Kiokee creek 16 miles from Harlem station, its nearest railroad, express and tele- graph station, and 35 miles from Au- gusta, its banking point. Has two churches-Baptist and Methodis'-a school, and flour and grist mill ope- rated by water power furnished by the afore-mentioned stream. Annual shipments of cotton about 100 bales.
