Foit Pulaski, named in honor of Brigadier Count Pulaski, is situated upon this island, 14 miles from St- vannah. It was erected in 1828, by Major Babcock, of the U. S Engineer Corps. It is a massive structure of brick, cost near a million dollars, and was about sixteen years in build- ing. Said to be the strongest and most perfect of the kind on the American continent.

Cumberland .. Camden
This is the most southern of all the islands skirting the coast of Georgia. The Indian name was Missoe, but changed when Oglethorpe visited it, at the request of an Indian chief who had received some kindness at the hands of the Duke of Cumberland. The island lies south of Brunswick, covering an area of about three by tweny miles. The soil is light and sandy, well adapted to the culture of the celebrated Sea Is- land cotton. Cedar, live-oak and pine constitute the growth. Some of the timber of which the frigate "Constitution" was built came from this island. The remains of Fort St. Andrews, built by General Ogle- thorpe, are on the south west side, and on the north end, or rather what is

About two miles wide by thirteen miles long ; high, dry and healthy, with a sandy soil susceptible of the highest cultivation by the aid of fer- tilizers. It is noted as being once the home of a celebrated half-breed Indian woman, Mary Musgrove, re- eognized as Queen of the Creek Na- tion ; and who became the wife of the Rev. Mr. Bosomworth. With all the arrogance of a despot, she laid claim to the site of Savannah, and her threats of vengeance against the col- ony, at that time in its infaney, were appeased by General Oglethorpe ceding to her the islands of Ossabaw, St. Catherine and Sapelo. Steamers connect with the city daily. Oysters, fish and water-fowl abound, and the islanders are most hospitable. The Ocean House, on Tybee, affords ample accommodations.
