Twenty miles southeast of Waynes. borough, the county seat, cia which the distance to Atlanta is 233 mile -. No further information could be procured from this point.

SAUNDERS TOWN. Pickens County. Four miles west of Jasper, its post- office.

SAVANNAH. Chatham County.

The county seat, and second city in size and commercial importance, is situated on the Savannah river, 1: miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The city was founded in 1733 by General James Oglethorpe. It became evi- deut from the first settlement that it would eventually become a place of great importance. Possessing an excellent harbor, and being in a mea- sure the gate through which must come the vast supplies for the interior country, the city has, despite the ravages of war and famine, steadily increased in population and imper. lance. And while its growth has not been so rapid as that of some other cities in the state, it has been perfect- ly healthy, until, at the present time the city is, from a financial point, in: as good condition as any city in the south.

ITS EARLY HISTORY.

After the first settlement in 1733, very little of importance occurred. SATILLA. except occasional attacks by Indians until 1754, when the first General Wayne County-M. & B. R. R. (See Haslum.) Assembly of Georgia convened in the city. During the war for inde. pendence, the city was alternately SATILLA. held by both Americans and British. Wayne County-B. & A. R. R. (Sce Lulaton. The loyalty of the inhabitants at this time, although frequently put to the severest test, was never for a mio. SATILLA BLUFF. Conden Counth. ment doubted by the other colonia -. After the close of the war in Decem- ber, 1789, the legislature granted a A landing on the Satilla river near ! charter of incorporation, and the first its mouth, and about 33 miles from ! eity government was inaugurated dur- the county seat, St. Mary's.

tinued to increase in importance un til 1820, when a destructive fire broke out, destroying in a few hours very nearly 500 houses, and inflicting a loss upon the inhabitants of over $4,000,000. The population at this time numbered about 7,500.

In 1821 the city was visited by vel- low fever, cansing great loss of life. The pestilence again made its ap- pearance in 1854 and again in 1570. During the late war between the States, Savannah was a point of great strag tic importance, conse- quently it su-tained great fosses.

Despite all this, the city has grad ually increased in importance. In 1850 the population was about 18 0 0. In 1860 it had increased to 22,000, and to 28,000 in 1870. The census of 18SO give it 30,681 within the corpo- rate limits.

In addition to the water communi- cations possessed by Savannah, there are several railroads. The Central, connecting the city with Macon and Augusta, and affording a western outlet ; the Savannah, Florida and Western, extending through the ex- treme southern portion of the State to Albany, a distance of 258 miles, and having branches to Ja konvi le and Live Oak, Fh. At the Latter point, connection is made with all Gult ports in western Florida. Bruge quantities of cotton come to savan nah by these two routes. The Sa vannah and Charleston, extending to the latter city, and attorling com- munication with northern and rut-t- ern cities. There are also short lines connecting the city with I-leo! Hope, Montgomery, White Bluff, Thumb r- bolt and other places of resort lying along the sea con-t.

The exports of Savannah, consist Ing of cotton -of which abon: S 0,0 xt bales are shipp d annually - rice, lumber, turpentine, rovin, wool, bees wax, fruits, vegetables, etc., rp prouch an aggregate value of about $75.000,0 0. per annum.

The manufacturing interests of the city are comparatively sind , but an impems is now b ing given to these interests, and from present indica- tions, Savannah in a few years will compare favorably in this respect,

with cities of like importance in the South.

The capital of the various banks is amply sufficient for the transact- ing of the business of the city.

There are a number of beautiful parks in different parts of the city, and also four cemeteries near.

The educational interests of the city are represented by the Savannah M dical College, the Academy of Saint Vincent dePaul, under the control of the Sisters of Mercy, and an excellent system of public schools for both white and colored pupils.

In point of public difices and churches, Savannah compares favor- ably with her sister cities. The ag- gregare number of churches of ali denominations being 33.

The city has telephone commun- cations, Western Union Telegraph and Southern Express. LaFayete Melnews, P. M.
