Gainesville, the nearest railroad, ex- press and telegraph station and bank- ing town. Is also connected by tele- phone with Gainesville and Dawson- ville. The principal business in the surrounding country is gold-mining, the majority of the mills and mines being located within a few miles of the town. The town derives its name from this metal, the name being an Indian word signifying "yellow mon- ey.' An U. S. branch mint was lo- eated here from 183S until 1861. The above named streams operate saw, grist, shingle and flouring mills, stamp mills for crushing gold ore, tannery etc. There are also stamp mills run by steam. Presbyterian, Methodist and Baptist churches. The North Georgia Agricultural Col- lege and Military Insti ute is located here, occupying the old mint build- ing, which was donated for this pur- pose by the U. S. Congress in 1872. The endowment fund amounts to $7,500.00, and there are about 200 students in attendance. There are also two private schools. The Moun- taito Signal (weekly) is the county paper.
