population of 800; 10 mites east of Decatur, the county seat, 16 from Atlanta, its nearest telegraph office and banking town, and 155 from Au- gustnt. It has two academies, several small schools, Baptist, Methodist and Presbyterian churches-white-and Baptist and Methodist churches-eol- ored-two grist and flouring mills, one saw mill, cotton gin, and two cab- inet shops, cotton gin, grist mill and drill operated by steam. One large distillery and quarry in operation here. The mountain bearing the same name is about one mile distant. and is one of the interesting features in this section of the State. Its eleva- tion is 1,636 feet above the level of the sea. A quarry was first opened liere in 1858, by Eli Spauld- ing. The mountain is almost a solid mass of granite, and its value for quarrying can scarcely be estima ted. Cotton, granite and whiskey are the principal shipments. Daily mail from Augusta and Atlanta.
