Was formerly the Capitol of the State until removed to Atlanta in 1867 by military orders, and subse- quently ratified by Constitutional Convention convened under the acts of reconstruction. Has churches of the different denominations, schools, and is the site of the Middle Georgia Military and Agricultural College. There are several notable buildings among which are the old Capitol and Executive Mansion. The State Lun- atie Asylum is located about a mile and a half from the city. Has a volunteer fire department, Southern Express office, and Western Union Telegraph office, and two newspapers -the Union and Recorder, and Sun- day Herald.
