AUGUSTA. Richmond County.

The county seat, situated on the Savannah river 250 miles from its mouth ; 132 miles from Savannah by rail, and 171 from Atlanta. The city was laid out in 1735, and the first house built in that year. Its growth was steady np to 1860, when it con- tained a population of 12,493, which was inereased to 15,356 in 170. The United States census of 1880 showed a population of 23,023, an increase of more than 50 per cent in the last de. cade.

It is rightly credited as being one of the handsomest cities of its size in the United States. Being regularly laid out, the streets extremely wide -Broad and Greene streets each having a width of 165 feet-the for- mer being the principal business thoroughfare and the latter the resi- denee of its inhabitants most favored by fortune with worldly possessions. Both ends of Broad street away from the immediate portion, have beauti- ful rows of shade trees in the centre. and Greene street is shaded and adorned by a quadruple row of inag niticent trees its entire length, form - ing a promenade unequalled for beauty and pleasure.

Augusta is at present the terminus of six railroads-the Georgia, Cen- nearest express office. Ten miles: tra , Macon & Augusta, South Caro- south of Boston-S. F.& W. R. cial centre this city is equaled by few in the south. The falls of the river at this point were utilized for manu- facturing and other purposes by the Augusta canal. The first survey was made in 1844, and the canal built with a width of 50 feet and a depth of 7 feet, and water admitted into the first level Nov. 23, 1846. In 1875 it was enlarged, and is now 150 feet wide and Il feet deep, its available power being estimated at 14,000 horse (of which some 2,000 is now in use ), and its entire cost amounting to about a million and a half dollars. In size, as to width and depth, it is second to but one in the world -the Suez ship canal.

and Read it Carefully. J

Among the industries operated by this power are the following cotton mills, viz: the Angusta Factory, En- prise Factory, Globe Mills, J. B Mc- Connelly's Mill, Summerville Mill, King Mill. The Sibley and King are not yet completed. The total number of spindles run by the above mills-on completion of the Sibley and King-will amount to 126,500. Augusta is also the market for the' goods manufactured by the Langley Factory at Langley, S. C., 9 miles distant, and the Graniteville Fac- tory, located at Aiken, S. C., 12 miles distant. These two mills run 41,000 spindles, which, added to the above, give a grand total of 167,500. About 5,000 operatives find employment through this source. In addition to the above are the Georgia Chemical Works, manufacturing fertilizers ; three large flouring mills, turning out about 450 barrels flour and 1,500 bush- els meal daily ; a cotton seed oil mill and two large irou foundries and ma- chine shops. Large, convenient and

handsome stores, well stocked, grace the city, worthy of mention amony which is Delaue & Hickok's. This building is 40 feet front by 125 deep, and is three stories higb, has an iron front, is fire proof and furnished with all modern conveniences for the ac- commodation of its customers.

The press is ably represented here by the Augusta Chronicle and Consti- tutionalist, a morning daily, tri- weekly and weekly, and the Augusta Evening News, daily and weekly. There is also a religious weekly, (col- ored), the Georgia Baptist.

The city is well supplied with ho- tels, ably conducted and affording ample accommodations to the travel- ing publie. The most prominent are the Globe and Planters. The moral and educational advantages are su- perior, there being about twenty churches of different denominations.

Among the institutions of learning may be mentioned the Richmond Academy, incorporated in 1783, be- ing the fifth oldest incorporated edu- cational institute in the United States; the Medical College of Geor- gia, incorporated in 1828, now the medieal department of the Univer- sity of Georgia, having a library of more than 5,000 volumes and a fine chemical laboratory ; St. Mary's Academy and the Academy of the Sisters of Mercy, and a public school system comparing favorably with any in the country.

There are several banking institu- tions, the combined capital of which aggregate 86,000,000. The city gov- ernment is composed of a mayor and board of councilmen. The Augusta Orphan Asylum (Roman Catholic) is located here. Several fine monu- ments tend to grace the city -- one erected by the city in 1851 at a cost of $3.000 to the memory of the Geor- gia signers of the declaration of in- dependence, Hall, Walton and Gwin- nett; one erected by the St. James Methodist Sunday-school to the mem . ory of the former teachers and -chol- ars who fell in the Confederate ser- vice, and a third erected by the La- dies' Memorial Association, at a cost Tot over $17,00), to the memory of
