The census of ISS0 gives this city a population of 4,317, an increase of 1,599 in ten years, and making it the seventh city in size in the State. The city is situated on a number of hills at the confluence of the Oosta. naula and Etowah rivers, which form the Coosa at this point. It is 80 miles by railroad from Atlanta, and the same distance from Chattanooga, Tenn. The distance to the former city, however, upon completion of a road now in course of construction, will be somewhat shortened. Rome is the metropolis of northwest Geor- gia, and being situated as it is, in the heart of a great agricultural and mineral region, and offering superior inducements for manufacturing, it is attracting the attention of capitalists from varions localities.


The manufacturing interests at present embrace several foundries, machine shops, flouring mills, etc. The city is well governed by a mayor and board of alderman; has tine water and gas works and a volunteer
