Highways


REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS.


To the Selectmen :


Work on the highways was begun according to the usual custom by scraping the streets as soon as the ground would permit in the spring, after which graveling and other repairs was done on the various streets as follows : Mount Pleasant street, III loads of gravel; Allen street, 103 loads of gravel ; Roel street, 25 loads of gravel ; Belcher street, 55 loads of gravel; North street we built 1000 feet of cobblestone road for which 306 loads of stone and gravel were used; on Warren street 158 loads of gravel, 10 loads of No. 2 crushed stone, 7 loads No. 3 crushed stone and 227 loads of ashes were used on sidewalks; Silver street, 193 loads gravel; South Main street, we built 1500 feet cobblestone for \ hich 480 loads stone and gravel were used. On North Main street we built 5300 feet macadam road, 550 tons of crushed stone, 35 loads gravel on side- walks; Pleasant street, widened street and built sidewalk on east side from Mr. Koppman's house to street leading to almshouse, 220 loads gravel were used, built 4 rods

face wall on east side, blasted ledge and removed same : Canton street, 65 loads gravel; West street, 45 loads gravel; Fowler street, 15 loads ashes on sidewalk, repaire 1 gutter at head of street; Union street, 28 loads gravel; Maple street, 30 loads gravel; School street, built 4 catch basins, laid 202 feet 10-inch drain pipe, 25 feet 12-inch iron pipe and built bridge across the street, built side- walks on both sides of street, blasted and removed large rock, paved gutter on South side, 92 loads gravel; Plain street, 8 loads gravel; Cottage street, repaired drain pipe ; Oak street, removed large stone; Chestnut street, repaired bridge; Wales avenue, repaired crossing; at A. Smith's had to reset the curbing; repaired smokestack and boiler of crusher plant. The trimming of brush on all streets was done when scraping. Cleaned ditches and culverts. Mill street, repaired bridge, paved and drained; mowed the grass on all streets that needed it.


Paid back snow bill of 1906 to the amount of $884.00. Repairs on fences etc., damaged July 4 was quite an item. I examined the crusher plant and found it would be quite expensive to repair, so I would recommend the sum of $700 for a new crusher.

Report of the Ooverseers of the Poor


The Overseers of the Poor herewith submit their report for the year ending December 31, 1907.


At the Almshouse, M. M. Sullivan and wife are in charge as Warden and Matron. The neatness, good order and general appearance of the House, speak in the highest terms of the qualifications of both Warden and Matron for their respective positions.


With the appropriations made this year, new floors have been laid, the house newly painted, the chimneys, walls and roof repaired, and the barn painted and shingled.


The majority of the bed rooms need new floors. We would recommend an appropriation for the same.


Average expense per week, per inmate, $2.26.
