ANNUAL REPORT OF THE
Water
Commissioners 1924
TOWN OF RANDOLPH, MASS.
REPORT OF THE WATER COMMISSIONERS
To the Citizens of Randolph :
The thirty-ninth annual report of the Water Com- missioners is herewith submitted for the year ending December 31, 1924.
The extension of the water mains along North Main Street connecting with the mains at West Corners and Pond Street was completed in May by Mr. A. C. Trojano of Brockton. This work was done by contract and ex- ceeded the appropriation to the extent of 56.04; this was caused by more ledge work than was anticipated. The connection is very important as it gives two com- plete lines of mains between the pumping station and the West Corners.
Another important extension was from the Belcher School on Belcher Street to Liberty Street. By extend- ing the main to Liberty Street we have cut out a dead end at the Belcher School. This will cause a better circulation of the water and give an opportunity for several more services. It is the intention of your Com- missioners to tie up all such dead ends as soon as possible.
An extension of the main was made on Highland Avenue; here the six-inch main was extended two hun- dred feet; this extension was made on an agreement that the petitioner should pay for water an amount equivalent to 6% of the expense of the extension.
Another extension was made on Centre Street, the: same guarantee being given as on Highland Avenue.

EIGHTY-NINTH ANNUAL REPORT
Your Commissioners, in conjunction with the Hol- brook and Braintree Water Commissioners, and with the advice and consent of the State Department of Health, purchased from A. B. Mann, a tract of land bordering on Great Pond, containing about ten and a quarter acres, and from Frank C. Walsh and George H. Eddy, a lot of land with a cottage .. The Towns of Randolph, Holbrook and Braintree now own all the land adjoining the shore of the pond from Pond Street south and east to the Braintree line with the exception of one building lot.
The condition of the water remains good as shown by the reports from the State Department of Health; the mains are also in good condition and show very little corrosion. Much labor is caused, however, by the loosening of the lead joints in the service pipe connections. Early in the year, the department found in checking the amount of water going through the pumps, that there was a loss of water amounting to about five hundred thousand gallons daily. The super- intendent walked over all the mains in Randolph and Holbrook endeavoring to trace any signs of a leak and could not find any, a leak detector was purchased, by the use of this instrument it was found that a lead joint had blown out of the eight-inch main on Warren Street right over a culvert, the water emptying in the stream. This was the largest loss of water since the installation of the water works. Leaks appear at the joints which necessitate digging down to the parts in order to make repairs. This condition is bound to in- crease with the age of the mains. There were twelve leaks in the fourteen-inch main the past year due to the- loosened lead joints.
