The Germans of Salisbury and the Hessian Village-their Home
By S. O. Kimm
Of the two brothers; one,has been sleeping in the Curtis Corners ceme- tery these many years.
The other brother raised a large family of boys and girls that have an uplifting force in whatever sta- tion they have been found. One of the sons is still living in Salisbury Cen- 'ter, highly respected in every way. Another son was a trusted merchant in Salisbury Corners for more than 50 years which business is still car- ried on by his sons.
One daughter "married a Loomis and their son, Will, has carried on an extensive business in building and building supplies for nearly half a century in the village of Dolgeville. One: daughter married a Farber and the Farbers have been a force for good , in that town for many years. Some of their daughters mar- ried Paines Hollow farmers. One is One an able rural school teacher.
daughter, was at one time president of the Owen D. Young school board of education. Workers in church and Grange, the Farber girls have done much to place rural life, on a higher plane. No one can dispute the fact that Grandpa Grassel, the Hessian immigrant to a back woods settle- ment; 'rendered Herkimer county a splendid "service in its moral, social and business development. And like- Wise did the Crouses and Wollen- steins of Cedarville, the Wagoners of the town of Ohlo and the Huferts of Herkimer.
Lt. Daniel Petri and Catharine Vols or Folts, may have married Maria Huber (Germ. Flats I-200) July 255, 1784 when the marriage of Daniel Peter and Maria Huber and four children were recorded. There were 2 Petrie sponsors, 3 Starings, 1 Kess- ler and for the last' one Fasier Cox and Catharine which would indicate that this Daniel belonged to this family. It has been suggested that he married Maria Staring or Gertrude Bellinger? (Herk. Ref. Oh. I-210; 1-26; 1-5). He was born in 17660.
:: 350. Catharina Petri born Oct. 1, 1786 .Oct. 1 Sponsors Daniel Petri and Catherin Kessler (G. F. I-130). 351. Elisabeth Petri born 9pril 22, 1788, bapt. April 27. Sponsors Joh: Adam Staring and Elisabeth Staring (G. F. I-129). .
'352. Daniel Petri born May 11, 1790, bapt. May 12. Sponsors Daniel Jac: Petri (G. F. I-145) and Elisa- abeth Staring.
353. Catharina Petri, daughter of Daniel Petri, Jr. and Maria Huber, born July 23, 1792; bapt. July 26. Sponsors Gasier Cox and Catharina (G.) F. I-161).
Captain Daniel Petrie (7) son of Johan Jost Petrie was killed in ac- tion by the Indian Allies during the Revolution, while defending the (Mill at Little Falls, N. Y. June 14, 1762 (should be'1782.) This Daniel was a miller nad owned the grist . mill at Little Falls that was destroyed June 14, 1782. He had left Fort Herkimer which was close by the mill to grind corn for the garrison when attacked by a band of Indians. He held the mill'until he killed several. He was captured and mutilated after the most atrocious methods of the red men.
The descendants of that little band of neighbors who came to Herkimer county 90 years ago from the little, village of Sant, province of Hesses in Germany are an influence for good In several states westward to the Pacific. Farmers, bankers. trialists, teachers, social workers, of- indus- ficers Uncle Sam's army, graduates of military schools and colleges, me- chanics and bullders, they have done well their share in spreading enlight- enment, culture and comfortable liv- ing in this great nation. Americans all with no idea and little knowledge of the privations endured by their grandsires when they came to a strange land to hew homes from the northern ". wilderness. ""Not one of their descendants is left in northern Salisbury and much of the land they redeemed from the primeval forest, is covered with weeds and worthless bushes. A stranger passing along the highways can only wonder what manner of people built the fallen stone walls now covered with weeds all of the iltte frame cabins in which and bushes. The log huts and nearly we lived have long since disappeared. Many of the fertile farms of Fair- field and Manheim on which we Ger- man boys and girls worked 70 odd years ago are fast growing over with worthless thorn bushes and weeds. Much of our fertile soil is being wash- ed to the ocean. It is a far cry from the, frugal days of our German immigrant forefathers to the most
wasteful people on the fact' of the earth. The student of history can eas- ily undersand that we are traveling the same road that led to the down- fall of other great nations'from an- cient Babylon and Rome to modern Germany with England and France apparently soon to follow.
