Those conversant with the history of the old seminary will recall how principal Van Petten resigned at the beginning of the Civil War to be- come the Chaplain of the 4th Regi- ment of N. Y. State Volunteers, and a score of young men volunteered with him. Among these were several Philos. So an effort was made to reach as many of these returned soldiers as possible. Sixty-four mem- bers of the Philo society had donned the blue. The Philos who died to pre- serve the Union were Ashton Avery, C. S. Ackerman of the 97th; Capt. E. D. Dresser, 57th Mass; Lieut. An- gus Cameron, 121st; J. H. Rock- wood, 4th and W. J. Root of the 152nd Regiment.
Several of the Philos became cap- tains and Lieutenants and one, S. W. Vincent, was colonel of the 33rd Ohio Volunteers. Most of the Society's boys were enrolled in New York State Regiments, but some were en- rolled from Iowa, Massachusetts, Tennesee, Delaware, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
