321X. Lorentz (Lawrence) Petni, of Washtenaw Co., Mich., no doubt is a son of Jost D. Petri (or Johann Jost) and Maria Elisabeth (Tommerman ?) (The 1840 census shows that both Lawrence Petrie and his wife were born between 1770 and 1780.) His gravestone has not been found and the exact date of his birth has not been determined. Durant says that he came to Stockbridge from Madison county, N. Y. "A Pioneer's Exper- dence in Ingham County" by Mrs. A. M. Durant says that the widow of Lawrence Petrie, Sr. returned to New York state and died there at the age of .98.

globe, by airship, steamboat, railroad and nearly all ways of travel and transportation. As a principal stock- holder in his concern and with two college trained sons to look after the business he can take vacations whenever and wherever he and his wife may, decide To be the owner of a yacht, a beautifal palm `shaded cottage in Palm Beach, summer camp with a far extended view of Lake Erie and the surrounding coun- try and a well appointed city home with butler and servants ready at his call is a far cry from the life and surroundings of his boyhood days, and those of his ancestors who help- ed clear away the primevai forest of northern Salisbury.
This grandson of Aunt . Rhoda Shedd Darling is generous and al- ways ready to help a worthy cause. One of the rising young lawyers of the city of Cleveland is a protege of his, whom he educated in the Ha :- vard Law School. As president of the Fairfield alumni association he has given liberally to furnish a memorial room which the curator has made a shrine for the descendants of Old Fairfield students.
Aunt Rhoda was poor in this world's goods but she was rich in determination and she brought up her children to be honest and thrifty. The promise of everyone of them was as good as their bond. Though 70 years have rolled away I can still recall Aunt Rhoda sitting in her old Boston rocker knitting, eternally knitting mittens and stockings for her family. None. could excel her stripped mittens for warmth and wear and her big fringe mittens would warm the hands of an Arctic explorer. I can still hear the click of her knitting needles ,the tick of the tall, oid grandfather clock and the steam from the big iron tea kettle that always stood on the Clinton air- tight stove with its elevated oven and wide spreading legs All that is mor- tal of Aunt Rhoda and Uncle Bill is lying in the little backwoods ceme- tery of Curtis Corners but they left the world far richer than they found it .The life they lived flings a chal- lenge to their descendants surround- ed with all that modern art and civ- ilization can exalt and embellish.
