SETTLERS OF CURTIS CORNERS Town of Salisbury
By Dr. S. C. 'Kimm
(Continued from last week) Phoebe Shedd, Mother of an Industrialist
When he left Salisbury sixty years ago I lost all tracks of him for several years, when I discovered that a Floyd Tanner was general su- perintendent of machine shops of that huge corporation, General Mo- tors, and then later vice president, I could hardly believe that the little boy I cared for and cradled in my arms had become a great executive. What a jump in a single generation from a log cabin in Curtis Corners to a spacious executive office in Flint, Michigan. Only in a land of free enterprise could such a miracle hap-
From thousands of baok settle- ments in these United States have come many of the great men of our nation. We picture the log shanty in which Lincoln was born but too often we are ashamed to admit that our own ancestors were of lowly birth. Then also by no stretch of fancy can we imagine one of our neighbor boys ever amounting "to a hill of beans." When a Fynn be- comes a nationally known ethnolo- gist or a Shedd a stimulating preach- er, or a Daley an industrialist or a Tanner an executive officer in a great manufacturing plant we won- der how such a thing could happen among our neighbors. We expect such things to happen some where else but not here at home. A pro- phet-is not without honor except at home among his own people. I am proud of old . Curtis, proud to have been one o fher children. I am proud of the log cabins that sheltered so many of us 80 years ago. I am' proud of the poor boys, some of them been one of her children. I am proud of the log cabins that sheltered so many of us 80 years ago. I am proud of the poor boys, some of them my schoolmates who have out dis- tanced me in the race. I knew many of the old settlers of northern Salis- bury, their children and their grand- children to the fourth and fifth gen- eration. They have all left.the cramp- ed quarters of their birthplace to work in larger fields of service to mankind. I hope the success of these
