The Battle of The Beukendaal
By DONALD A. KEEFER Glenville, N. Y.
(Continued from last week)
It had not been Toll but the fluttering of the captive crow which had attracted the would-be rescuers and drawn them into the open field The yelling savages leaped from under cover with hatchet and scalping knife. Immediately the greater part of the Connecticut levies turned and ran for their lives, but the brave men of Schenectady stood their ground, firing their muskets and then using them as clubs. The battle' soon became a hand-to-hand struggle and it is said that after the bodies of DeGraff, Glen and other Scotia and Schenectady men were found lying side by side with those of Indians they had fought with.
Soon the little group of Dutch and the few soldiers left were reinforced by a second party sent out from Schenectady, which consisted of a small company of New York militia led by Adain . Van Slyck. As soon as they were in range of the Indians" deadly flre they also turned and ran for cover.
The remaining party seeing that it was madness to remain made their way slowly out of the ravine to the second floor where they quickly pried off clap boards, and from these op- enings fired on the enemy concealed behind the surrounding trees and bushes. These men in the house un- der Simon Toll, a brother of Capt. Daniel, made a gallant defense, and held out heroically until relieved by reinforcements.
The enemy several times attempted to set fire to the house, but were each time driven back by the musket fire from within, This ancient land- mark, well remembered by many area residents as the little "Red House," was torn down in 1915.
While all this was going on Dirk Van Vorst, wounded and a prisoner, had been left in charge of two young Indians. These Indians, eager to watch the battle in progress, tied Van Vorst to a tree and left him. Van Vorst soon succeeded in reaching his concealed knife and cut his bonds. He then hurried away as fast as he could and had not gone far before he met a third party of arnied men proceeding to the Beukendaal from Schenectady, headed by Jacob Glen and Albert Van Slyck. When the ene- my saw this last reinforcement com- ing into sight they lost no time in retreating up the old patn leading

There were many Werts men- . Sioned in it, but not looking for that mame did not take note of them. Some other forms of spelling not mentioned before is Wertz, Wirtz, Wirts, Wirth. Will try to find more Information later but will send what I have at hand just now. 1
