The Deserted Village of Mexico
By S. C. Kimm
Second Attempt to Find Mexico They made so much fun of me for getting lost in my native heath that I determined I would find Mexico if it took a leg. This time John and Willard did not go. I guess they had lost confidence in me as a guide in the wilds of Salisbury. This time our party consisted of May 'and my three grandsons, Howard, Bob and Dick. Old Lizzie carried us as far as Denny Nagles where she pa- tiently waited all day.
'This time I decided to penetrate | Mexico from the north. It was easy to follow the old Mexico road for a mlle to the eastward because Den-
My city bred grandsons thought it great sport to force their way through the brush and listen to the tales Gramp told about the old set- tlers and big messes of trout he caught when he was a boy.

Big bluff Jim Harte and Ann Eliza Tompkins, a relative of the Van Vechtens. The next teach- .er I recall was Wm. H. Keeler whose mother was an old time teacher in the . log school houses of Norway. John D. Henderson was once her district school pupil. Later came Frank Murray now, of Herkimer. Two more teachers whom I recall were Rose Dunning and Minnie Wal- rod, both from the Curtis school dis- tricot. So far as I know Frank Mur- ray is the only one living of all those old time teachers. Frank said he visited these, old school grounds in the summer of 1937 and the only way he could locate the school house' was by a certain large flat rock which he recognized as a play space for his long ago pupils. Mr. Murray said that trees several, inches In' diameter are now growing where his school house, once .stood. So quickly does mother nature recall

After luncheon we retraced our way along the overgrown road to visit the Jones clearing.
