One can almost hear the old gentleman sputter about the modern generation with their lack of respect for elders, no reverence for the doers of heroic deeds for our land of liberty, no enthusiam for the flag, Ideas of protection of the land and defense of the home, not a thought except to gad about, the minute the day's chores were done, pile into the cutter and go to some barn dance and even to ride for cash on those lightning fast railroad con- traptions, thinking nothing of going as much as five or ten miles on them for an evening social. The good olod times were gone. First the canal rulned the carrying trade around the falls, next the canal was enlarged so the 250 ton lakers would carry as much wheat as a whole train load of 20 R. Dockstader - - The Origin of the Name

By John M. Dockstader

The first one of this name in America was George Dockstader who came over with the Palatine Emi- gration of 1710 and was noted in the records as being from Hanover, Ger- many.

The province of Hanover is the most northwesterly part of Germany and touches the North Sea between the Netherlands and Denmark. This is come 250 mlles along the cooast froom the Brill (Briele, Holland) on the left bank of the mouth of the Rhine river, where most of the Pala- tine Refugees were assmebled, some 40,000 of them, at the time of the Palatine Emigration.

Aanlysis of the name Dockstader shows "Stadt' 'meaning a city or town, with the suffix' "er" meaning "of the city" or "an inhabitant of the city." The name was long thought to be occupational (Docks as re- ferring or wharves or Dachs as re- ferring to roofs) but no logical con- nection could be found. It would now seem that the name Is locational in- stead of occupational, and that Dock- stat-er means coming from Dock- stadt.

- A piece of traditional information has now (1948) come to hand through Mr. George LeRoy Dock- stader of Short Creek, Arizona who states that at one time there was published in the papers of the Lat- ter-day Sains the statement "There was a small province In northeastern Germany by the name of Dockstader and all of the Dockstaders came from there." .

Analysis of the tradition shows two ideas, first, that of coming from a town or place of the family name;

and second, that of coming from northern Germany. This second part is borne out by the second of coming from Hanover and so lends color to the first part.

We have been unable to locate any such place in North eastern Germany but there is a town of Dachstadt in southern Germany and I feel sure that this is the place referred to. Tradition could well have confused the memory of coming from northern Germany with the memory of coming from a place of the family name and so give a wrong direction for the location of that place.

It would seem that the first user of this name, whereveh he settled, was proud of coming from Dach- stadt and made quite a point ofo it. "This is on the assumption that he went by way of the river and ses coast). For the name to have been distinctive, the location of his settle- ment must have been close enough to Dachstadt so that the town would be known, and yet far enough away so that a person coming from there would not be common. (Hanover checks well with this).

It is also quite possible that there was a difference in physical build or complexion between him and other local inhabitants. This would make him and his family stand out 'as & group which would become known as "The Dockstaders", and so become the family name. In corroboration of the descriptive character of the name we have the following circumstance. At one time my father had some cor- respendance with an antiquarian con- cerning an early document .(in the 1600s, I think) which was signed George Dockstader.

THE OLD SLUICE

Our grandfathers in the old days floated logs down Spruse Creek dur- ing spring freshets. They met with great difficulty in getting the logs over the rocks and boulders of the swift water so they built a sluice- fromo the upuper stillwater to the! deep stillwater below where ye an- cient pedagogue caught the two big trout.
