One section of the store was de- voted to hardware for the house and farm. Back of. a lot of sales one can easily surmise the laborious work of the women-so many sales of stove blacking, brooms and mops, wash tubs, "close" lines, carpet warp, etc. We cherish today the quilts made In the 1848 days but give scant thought to the work of the women behind them ..
Farm products were taken to the store and exchanged in trade or left pn credit. One notes in this daybook eggs credited for 12 cents per doz- cn, butter 17 cents per pound, Isrd 9 cents, potatoes 50 cents per bu- shel, tallow and candles, honey, oats, rye, etc.
This store owner was school trus- tee and he sold a good deal to Dis- trick No. 10. About the only item the store didn't seli was furniture. The spelling in the dsybook is most amusing, e. g .- Tobackow, Boosen, Butens, Allapackey, Mowstraps, Sal Rates, Corse coam, Agitt Buttons, Cuttnaile, Picied Cod, Purell .Butons, Hourse and Horasc cards, Dearn Nedle, etc.
