HOWELL, SOULE

well b. May 21, 1789 and he married Jan. 21, 1813, Edith Soule, b. Feb. 18, 1789. He d. May 16, 1873 and she d. Feb. 22, 1878. Both are buried at Ludlowville, N. Y. Where were they born and marrled? They lived for a time at Skaneateles, N. Y.

Great grandfather freighted goods in the old time bateaux thru the waterways of this state and I am told that he loved to relate stories of these early days. But only one has been remembered. At Little Falls there was a portage around the rapids, I believe, and near the rapids was a stone house in which a man lived who kept a number of "nigger wenches" who loaded the bateaux and their contents on their strong backs and carried them around the portage. And I have been told that this stone house was still standing a few years ago.

George Soule came to Plymouth on the Mayflower in Dec. 1620. He was a servant from Eokington, Worcest- ershire, England. He lived and'mar- ried and had a son Nathaniel who m. Rose ----- > and they had a son Nathaniel Jr. who m. Meribah Gif- ford. Was Edith Soule a descendant from this George?

Edward Howell and his wife had 10 children, Calista Louisa, Louisa-Mar- ia, Adeline Samantha, James Frank- lin, Charles Sidney, Henrietta D. B., Mercy (Bachman), Carolina Minerva, Coleman Marsh, John T."

THE FRENCH PARISH AT ENKHUIZEN, HOLLAND

A French Parish (also called Wal- loon parish) has existed at Enk- huizen, from 1686 till 1721. Novem- ber 1685 some refugees applied to the municipal corporation to nego- tiate on the possibility of settling down at this town of 25 to 30 fam-

Dr. and Mrs. R. C. Petrie, : ilies of Huguenots who fled from | Johnstown, N. Y. their country.

The burgomasters gave their per- mission, first out of sympathy for the prosecuted co-rellgionists but also because the number of inhabitants, (which was dreaming) could thus be made up again and a chance was giv- en to "new industries' to be" estab- lished.

The municipal government promis- ed all kinds of co-operation and gave the group concerned many facilities and so in March 1686 the refugees were able to settle down.

A Parish was founded under their own clergyman whose Was name Pierre Roufrange.

Previously a collection was made for them which brought in not less than seven thousand six hundred and eighty four guilders (7684, -- ) and to which Calvinists as well as Luth- erans and Roman Catholics had con- tributed (the last two compulsory). This money was made to a fund

of which the refugees were helped 'in many respects,"also, advance money on several industries, as cloth and milk manufacturies were established

daughter of Antoine de Puy and Marie Monsarrat, and

July 12, 1705 baptized Anne, dau- ghter of Antoine du Puy and Marié Monsarrat.

Antoine du Puy, mentioned above, had fled from France and had lived at Arnhem, Holland, and married Marie Monsarrat. He settled down at Enkhuizen in 1690, and seems to have been a tradesman.

His eldest son, Carel Jan, became a clergyman (among other places) at Leimuiden, Holland; and another son, Pieter, became a medical doc -. tor and established himself at Enk- huizen and held high government of- fices. He died in 1766 at The Hague. A son of Pieter du Puy, was born in 1754 and died in 1834. He became' a professor of Medical Science at Leiden.

The name of du Puy (also Dupuy) has been connected with Enkhuizen for a long time. The other French names have disappeared from that town. Only the name of Godefroy still occurs, just as the. name of Belier, which also originates with a refugee.

The Huguenot-community thus had a most sober existence. Yet they held their own under their clengy- man Pierre Roufrange. When he died in 1721 it was not considered neces- sary to appoint a successor and the olerical organization was dissolved.

The members partly went over to the Calvinist Church, others stayed on their own or settled down some
