This time, I decided to penetrate | Mexico from the north. It was easy to follow the old Mexico road for a ·mile to the eastwand because Den- ny was using it as a wood road, but when we turned south at Spruce! Creek our troubles began. The old Mexico, bridge was gone and we were obliged to pick our way across on stones and driftwood, and imme- diately we found the one time ex- cellent wagon road completely chok- ed with alders and other under- brush. In places the scrub was so thick it would puzzle a jack rabbit to pass through. The meadows that once produced fine crops for Tom Welch and George Redmon had re- verted to forest from which the Salisbury lumberjacks were cutting spruce logs. We found the original
Jones Clearing
After luncheon we retraced our way along the overgrown road to" visit the Jones clearing. Having crossed Spruce Creek once more we left oud luggage under a. clump of bushes near where Mike Murphy's house stood many years ago. We fol- lowed the path . to the ruins of an old saw".mill. I showed my grand- sons a deep hole nearby into which a tiny spring brook falls and where in the old " days large trout used to lie in the cool spring water. 'I'show- ed them the spot where a olty ped- agogue sat when he caught two large' trout several years ago. Then I took the party a little farther up stream and showed them the swift water in' Spruce Creek where this same teacher filled his basket with beau- tiful speckled trout. This was the finest and largest mess of trout I ever saw taken out of Spruce Creek at one time. That pedagogue who" caught that big mess while Gramp had only a measly half dozen finally ; became a highly respected citizen of Salisbury Center, although he still indulges in the piscatorial art.
