The Deserted Village of Mexico

By S. C. Kimm

Dear Editor.

I would like to take your readers on a trip over a certain road in Salisbury as it was 70 years ago. This road extended from the main road from Salisbury Corners to Cur- tis Corners starting at a point a few rods "west of the . Curtis cemetery and extending north to the Nagle farm on the Slip Road. This road was about five miles long. Seventy years ago there were many small, productive farms on both sides nearly its entire length. 1

Lyman Davis

The first home was that of Lyman Davis who claimed to be 100 years old. He cultivated a few acres of land to raise vegetables for himself and aged wife. I think he had an army pension of the war of 1812.

Ephraim Comstock

The next place was that of Eph- raim Comstock who had .a farm of 100 acres. He also had a family of 11 children. He sent 3 sons to the Civil War, one of them, James never returned. Ephraim Comstock was

The Eckler Family

By W. N. P. Dailey

It is not known exactly when this Dutch family came from Holland to America. The name is variously spelled Eckler, Ecker, Ecklar, Eccles, etc. Their first settlement was in New England, but they migrated to New Jersey about 1700. In 1740 they joined the Van Horne family to whom they were related, in a trek' to New York state, taking up land in Warren, Herkimer county. Ben- ton's history refers to them as part of a European settlement near the southern line of the town of Stark or within the limits of Springfield (1754). The Ecklers were on . the Henderson Patent in the Petrie Pur- chase. During the Revolution these settlements were forsaken, the peo- ple going to Fort Plain for safety.

Mrs. Blanche Benton Heller, still living in Hollywood, Cal. tells of a visit she made in the Ecker sette- ment (Warren) many years ago and on John Ecker's family whose re- cords are in the Herkimer church statistics. A son of Henry Eckler who was attacked by the Indians and Tories and. a younger brother, re- turned to the original farm which since the Patent purchase has re- mained in the Eckler family. John Eckler at the time of Mrs. Heller's visit was 71 and a brother, living in Sharon, was 88 and a third broth- er was 68. It was a large family, rather clannish but congenial, some wealthy among them. Thirteen Eck- ler men took part in the Revolution- ary war and several were in the ear- lier French and Indian wars as Ser- geant Henry Eckler and Henry Eck- ler, Jr. in Capt. Kolck's company.

We begin the Eckler record with Christina Eckler who was of the first generation. The second gener- ation is Henry ( ?) Eckler born about 1718 and who married Margaretta Jung. Their . children were: Henry, (3) born 1740 and died 1836. He was a captain in the Revolution and at Oriskany. His wife was Christina? John Christopher born Aug. 12, 1744 at Fort Plain and died at Warren, N. Y. Nov. 28, 1834. As widow she had given her 160 A .. Bountyland. Peter's brother, Christopher born Dec. 25, 1748 was also in the Revolutionary war.

Peter Eckler (1789). He was with Gen. Herkimer at Unadilla in July 1777 and later at Oriskany. He was an assessor in the town of German Flatts, later road commissioner. Capt. Eckler had two sons toma- hawked by the Indians. Another son, Jacob, when three years old, was tak- en by the Indians and held 12 years. Capt. Eckier and wife, Christana had a large family.

Nearly a mile farther north was the home of the Rice family who had years who had come from Germany but a few years before. They lived on this little farm but a short time when they moved to the Curtls road near the Ngw Bridge. They in turn were followed by James Dunning and later by the Walrads.

Batt Murphy

The next farm of 50 acres was worked by Batt Murphy and his large family of boys. Just across the creek farther north lived Batt's brother Joe Murphy. The School House

The next building we come to on our imaginary trip was the school where the old time pedagogue held sway over the 35 pupils of the set- tlement of Mexico.

The Murphys lived nearest to the school house and the next little farm was that of Pat O'Hara. Tom Welch lived farther along and his near neighbor was George Redman. Thl brings us to Spruce Creek which we cross on a high bridge. On the knoll at the right we find a boarding hall which Mr. Baldwin built to house the lumberjacks who worked in his near- by sawmill. The boarding hall was run by Jim Luther.

Still farther to the west 'were the homes of John Murphy John O'Hara and Pete Miller. Mik~ Murphy lived back In the lot not for fram where Frank Sanderson operated a stave mill.
