army less than 100 years ago, came to Salisbury "and later helped his parents, , 4 sisters and . 4 brothers across the Atlantic to northern Her- kimer, Co., and their descendants to "this day are prominent in business affairs of the Mohawk Valley and in the State of Wisconsin where several of the Sassmans migrated.

About 90 years ago a great many Germans got, permission to leave their native land to set sail for America. It is not the province of this article to tell how they got out of Germany, nor of the dangers of the stormy "Atlantic, nor of the hard- ships of clearing the forests and erecting their log houses' to shelter their families. But it is the desire of the writer to contrast the present circumstances of the descendants of the dozen or more families who came from the village of Sant with the wretched condition of our near relatives in Sant today whose an- cestons had not the courage or means to come to America 75 years ago. Let us name a few of our prosperous neighbors whose ancestors came from Sant in Germany. The Grassel family, we find their grandchildren successful farmers and merchants in Salisbury, Norway, Dolgeville, War- ren and Little Falls when we see their comfortable homes it is diffi- cult to think of the suffering of the Grassels in Germany.

Two poor boys came fromo Sant and in a land of free competition they became the most influential men in West Winfield. Knowing the wealth of the Hiteman family can one think that their pet dog gets more calories per day than some of their relatives get in Germany.

Contrast the nice homes and the good wages or other incomes of the Huferts and Rings of Herkimer, the Wagoners of Ohio, the Ecklers of Salisbury, the Crouses and Wollen- steins of Cedarville with those of village of Sant.,

In Ilion a few years ago lived the son of poor parents who came from, Johan Jost Petrie family and de- Sand. He became a foreman in the scendants in America were compil- ed by the late Mrs. Frederick Staeh- la, of Munnsville, N. Y. Her notes have been checked, so far as we have been able to do so, and we will try to complete her work. Library Bureau, a deacon in the Bap- tist church and owner of the 4 fam- ily apartment on Second St. Contrast this with the present condition of the large Rice family who remain in Germany today:

The Klippels

Does any one doubt the good luck! of . the Grassels, Rices, Huferts Rings, ' Wolfensteins, Sitemans, Eck lers'and Kimms. that they were per- mitted to be born in America instead of today starving with their relative

in Germany. If any one thinks I am stretching the truth let them read the foregoing letter showing the con- dition of the Klippel family over in the village of Sant in the American zone in Germany.

Nearly 90 years ago George Klip- pel came to Herkimer county with a family of 3 daughters and 5 sons. I remember the father as a shoe- maker in Curtis Corners in Northern Salisbury. 80 years ago a daughter married Leonard Kimm and their son became a banker in Iowa. For her second husband she married David Metzger. Her two sons were among the most successful farmers in Litchfield. She has 3 grandchild- ren whose farms, a few miles south | Nancy of Ilion are perhaps the most pro- ductive in the township. Contrast those three beautiful farm homes with all modern conveniences with the homes of the Klippels in Ger- many and thank the Lord the old shoemaker left his native land 90 years ago.

Three of the sons went to Iowa their descendants live today. A son George owned a saw mill in the Gulf 6 miles south of Ilion. Some of his children are prominent in Ilion affairs. One daughter married a pro- minent farmer and lives in a beauti- ful cottage 4 miles south of Ilion.

The Shoemakers son, Fred, mar- ried a Sassman girl and had a large family. All are dead except Fred Klippel Jr., who is perhaps the rich- est man in Cedarville with a very attractive home. What a contrast in living between Germany and Amer- 'ica as shown by the Cedarville and Ilion homes of the Klippels and the foregoing letter.

Ninety years ago an army of Kimms lived in Hesse, Germany and out of that large aggregation 'only ne family came to America. In this apitolistic country the children and grandchildren of the Kimms have en- tered nearly every avenue open to the toiler's of America. Their names are on the rosters of our greatest college," West Point, Harvard, Yale, and a score of smaller colleges across the United States. Bankers, farmers, army officers, teachers, preachens and some of their descendants are merchants in Ilion under another name. New York, Iowa, Dakota and the' state of Washington have felt their Influence. The third and fourth generation furnished a score of sold- iers for World War II. Many times a day I thank my lucky star that I was not destined to spend my days in" our ancestral village of Sant, where people are desperately strug- gling, to find the barest necessities of life while here in America no one hears"of a Kimm "forsaken or his seed begging bread.'
