When Adam's share came due in 1851 George was unable to raise the required cash, although he had pro-
which he was attempting to sell: The letter closes with the admonition, "I wish you to bear in mind to keep this a secret. If it should come out it might have a tendency to ruin your Uncle George, whose intentions I be- lieve is to pay you every cent hon- orably."
The letter refers to a $50 payment made "a few days ago," and to George's intention to send $50 more in October.
Mrs. Davern has a receipt, dated Concord, Jefferson county, Wiscón- sin 5 November 1852, "$10.00 Receiv- ed of George Petrie ten Dollars being a part of My share of my Fathers Estate. Adam Petrie." On the ,re- verse side appears the notation, "This receipt . and the note attached represent the item in the account charged as $50 cash on the 5th Nov. 1852."
Another receipt from Aaron, dated November, 1856, "acknowledges the receipt of $292.16 and the interest thereon, from George Petrie (463), the special guardian of said children, in full for his share or portion of the proceeds from the sale of the farm whereof the said Jost Petrie died seized and which has been sold by order of the Court of Chancery of said state."
In his 1852 letter John Hoover in- forms Adam Petrie (1386) of the "unexpected death among us of your Aunt Nancy Nelson" on 12 .August 1852. Unless this Nancy was a sister of Anna De Muth she must have been General Joseph's sister Nancy (468) who, at the 1843 probate of the will of their father Johannes D. (83) was married to Jacob Small of Herkimer. It may be that, between 1843 and 1852, Jacob died and Nancy married a. Nelson.
The above mentioned letter also reads, "It gives me great pleasure to hear that Urial (No, 1381 the cripple) is doing well. The 'condition and circumstances in which he is in calls upon every man that has "a feellng heart in his bosom.to sym- pathize with him."
All of these references imply that John Hoover, writer of the letter, was closely connected with the fam- ily. Does any reader know of the re- lationship ? Could he be the father of the Nicholas "Harter or Herder" who married Catharina Petrie (467), sis- ter of General Joseph Petrie (460)'? He literally chopped out his farm and home and acquired 210 acres of well improved land as his reward. Jost was a Republican In politics; chair- man of the town board and town clerk for many years; town super- intendent of schools; member of Wis- consin's Legislature in. 1861. deceased, of Little Falls. (1387). Ellen Petrie, daughter of Joseph, of Little Falls, N. Y. Note: Isaac Harter, Jost D. Pe- trie, Adam Petrie and Ellen Petrle are infants under 21 years of age. Dudley Demuth, Executor. Purchase of Farm by Johannes Petrie (83)
The farm, which was purchased for the use of the son John (464) and family, is described in, a deed dated April 4, 1844 ,and found in the Book of Deeds V. 3-p. 564 in County Clerk's Office," Watertown, Jeffer- son Co., N. Y. From John LaFarge (large land owner in Jefferson Co.) to George and Aaron. Petrie of Lit- tle Falls, N. Y., Executors of Estate of Jost Petrie of same, deceased, part of Lots No. 15, 26, '27 and two pieces of 64 and 82-100s acres, and in Lot No. 14, 26 and. 10-100s acres, total 89 and 92-100g acres. Cond. $700.00 "in trust for the support of the family of John Petrie, a son of the said testator under and according to the provision of the 8th article of said will, which will was proved and recorded before and by the Surrogate of the county of Herkimer, 9th of October 1843.
wIt is hoped readers of this series will be able to clarify a number of confusing aspects of the data pre- sented above. The will of Johannes (83) does provide for the purchase for $700 of a farm for the use. of John ':(464), which . Richard (462) was presumably to share. But why these sons, aged 44 and 32, respec- tively, at .date of the will, "" should have been treated as minors requires an explanation. One. of his descend- ants states that John (464) Petrle considered himself a "gentleman" and above manual labor. Perhaps this improvidence was the reason for his father's arranging for the purchase of a farm and the payment of his son's debt to Frederick Dox- tader.
" According to the petiiton for pro- bate of the will, the executor was Dudley Demuth. But the farm seems to htave been purchased by Geo. and Aaron Petrie, "Executors of the Es- tate of Jost" (not Johannes) Petrie. While General 'Jost (460) appears to have died intestate, the details of the settlement of his estate are evi- dent from a letter in possession of Mrs. Edward Davern, dated Man- heim, N. Y. September 25, 1852, written by John Hoover to Adam Petrie (1386).
According to this letter the farm belonging to General Joseph Petrie (460), who died 31 December 1833, was sold for the benefit of his child- ren by his brother George Petrie (463), to Mr. Benjamin P. Church- ill for $1,753. Johannes D. Petrie (83) and John Hoover were his "ball for the proper , fulfillment of the business entrusted to him." Accord- ing to the record in the county clerk's office the agreement of sale provided for six payments of $292.16 each on 10 September 1837; 3 Au- gust 1839; 20 November 1841; 18 November 1843; 15 September 1851; And: 30 October. 1853,. these dates being; the 21 st birthday anniversaries of the surviving children of, Gener- al Joseph (1380, 1381, 1382, 1383,
