THE SETTLEMENT OF JONES CLEARING
The following letter from Clara Jones of Chenango Park, N. Y. tells how the Jones clearing of northern Salisbury was settled: She writes "My grandfather, Parker Jones, in the year 1833, came from Hancock, Mass. and located about two miles north of Mexico. Grand mother stay- ed with her sister who was the wife of Benn Kelly who lived somewhere on the slip road, I think near Porter Spring, while grandfather Jones went into the wilderness, cleared land and built a house with very little help ecept what my father, a lad scarcely 12 years old, could give him.
The orchard was from apple seeds which they brought from Hancock, Mass
Later two brothers of grandmoth- er, Stephen and Ishmeal Nichols, came and built west of them, where; the Doyles afterward lived. A fam- fly by the name of Greene and anoth- er by the name of Morgan settled south of them. Also a brother of grandfather's came but died soon afterward. Grandmother's sister, aunt Lottie and uncle Ephraim Comstock. located between this place and Mexi- co. 'At the time they settled there were several homes in Mexico. John Smith lived where Redmond later lived. East of them was Tra 'Shedd, Bronson and Lyman Davis. There were several others whose names I. do not recall. There were the Mc- Evoys, Oharas, Murphys and "Mill- ers."
Sincerely Clara A. Jones

FOSTER
I would like any information in regard to the following families: Kindly have the information come to you and forward to me through you.
Joseph Foster' (Forster), a Revolu- tionary soldier. His daughter, Jane Foster, married Floyd Wanger. They had three children, viz: Charles Frederick, Betsey. Colista Jane. Col- ista Jane married Benjamin LaForge. The InForge family seems to have the following spellings in the early records - Leforge, Lefurge and Le- furgy. The first LaForge in this country was/ Adrian who came to New York (Bushwick) in 1653. Des- cendents settled in Staten Island. New Jersey. and Westchester County. Later one of these branohes went to Cold Springs, Putnam County. I would like to know which branch of the LaForge families settled in Cold Spring. This LaForge family mar- ried in the Teeple family (probably from New Jersey). I would like in- formation of the Teeple family also. Beniamin LaForge's father was Peter LaForge and his wife was Betsey Bowne. I would like to know who her parents were.
The Wanzers, Fosters, Bownes and LaForges were all in Putnam County
gus County in 1850. Wanted. paren't- are and further ancestry of both with names of their children and all possible data.

In reply to our injufry, the Na- tional Geographic Society locates the town of Dachstadt about 15 miles north east of Nurenburg, in Bavaria. It is in the district of Middle Fran- conia, which is bounded on the east by the district of Upper Palatenate, the boundry being but a few miles
Nuremburg is"' on" the river Peg- nitz which at Bamberg flows into the Main, which in turn flows into the Rhine at Maintz. It is some 200 miles south of the city of Hanover which again is some 140 miles south of the sea coast. As Dachstadt is but 15 miles from Nuremburg, its history and conditions can be judg- ed by some of the history of that place.
Nuremburg (in German Nurnberg) Is the second town In size and the first in commercial importance in Bavaria. It is about 95 miles north- west of Munich. The first authentic ention of the town is in a document of 1050.
It has always held a high place in Art and Manufacturing. One of its developments being clocks and later watches which were at first called "Nuremburg Eggs". For 3 or 4 cen- turies the town was especially favor- ed by German Monarchs who fre- quently resided there, Like Augsberg, Nuremburg obtained great wealth as an intermediary in the trade between Italy and the East on one hand and northern Europe on the other.
