ARMSTRONG

Ashbei Armstrong born 1769 died 1847 or 1848, married Betsy Straw- bridge, both buried at Mt. Vision, N. Y.

Ashbei Amstrong II born June 9, 1790 married Amy born Jan. 15, 1794, died May 16, 1869.

Ashbel II came from Otsego Co., N. Y. to Virginia and was my fath- er's grandfather.

Data wanted.

I think this line comes from Jon- a than Armstrong, one of the origi- nal settiers of Westerly, R. I.

Mrs. Mary Armstrong Jefferson 515 Irving street, Winston Salem 7, N. C.

GUNN

Who were the parents of Doily Gunn, who married Samuel Nisbet In Granville, Washington Co., N. Y. August 28, 1803 ?

Was this a Quaker marriage? Samuel's father, Robert Nisbet, had been the recommended first speaker of the Friends Society at the meet- ing in Adams, Mass. He died Oct. 16, 1795.

Dolly Gunn was born according to family records on Jan. 4, 1784 and was said to be "of Westfield." Re- cords of Westfield, Mass. and of Blandford, Mass. to which some Westfield Gunns had removed, show no Gunn births at ali near these dates.

Dolly had a brother Chester Gunn who removed to East Henrietta, N. Y. and had a son Winslow and a daughter, Caroline who married, a Goodman and lived on the old home- stead at East Henrietta. Correspon- dence with any descendant or with anyone knowing one is aolicited.

Dolly had six sisters, Rhoda, Bet- sy, Lydia, Ann, Grace and Julia. Rhoda married Peter Button and we sre in touch with hed descend- ants. But nothing further is known of any of the other sisters. Any In- formation welcomed.

Dolly and the others were said to be be grandchildren of General Shep- ard. So far we have not been able to find a General who had Gunn grandchildren. If any are known, we will be happy to know of them.

Dolly was said to be "of Rhode Island stock." We know that many Quakers emigrated from Rhode Is- land to the Hoosac Valley. Does any- one know of a Gunn family among these and to what town they came?

Samuel and Doily (Gunn) Nisbet had sons William and Samuel born in Granville, N. Y .; Orisa, born at Deerfield, N. Y. 1808 married Wm. Visor; Rhoda Ann, born 1810, mar- ried J. Dewey Adams of Westmore- land, N. Y .; Eunice Emily, born 1812 married Aifred Marsh; Lydia Shel- don Nisbet born 1814, married Geo: Harger; Hannah Tingley Nisbet, born at Newport, N. Y. married Pet- er Jay Button; Robert Brown Nisbet

Lee, Amita, daughter of Joseph 6 and Lois (Codnor) Parke, on Oct. 20, 1799, first child Betsy was born In 1800. His gravestone says he was 85 years of age at his death on Sept. 8, 1860. U. S. Census records of 1850 and 1860 say he was born In Maine.

Nathan and Elizabeth (Freeian1) Haii of Winthrop, Maine, had a son Abijah, born, according to two his -. tories of Winthrop, Maine and to Hails of New England, on Oct. 21, 1774. Nathan died October or Decem- ber, 1775. A posthumous daughter was born Feb. 26, 1776 called Betsy; so this Abijah could not have been born in 1775 on Oct. 21. There was an older sister Mary, calied Polly, born March 12, 1773. After the death of Nathan the family returned to the home of the mother in Hopkin- ton, Mass. Here In 1789 Abijah chose his uncle, John Freeland, his guard- lan as did Betsy. Mary chose John Stone of Sutton, Mass. There we lose Abijah.

Can any reader help to fill in the gap between 1789 and 1798?

(B) John Freeland 'removed to Claverack, N. Y. Can anyone who has access to records of this locality for this period assist by searching there for Abijah ?

(C) The circumstantlal evidence that these two Abijahs were one and the same is further strengthened by the fact that Abijah of Lee named his first daughter Betsy (after his mother Elizabeth and youngest sis- ter Betsy?) and two daughters by two wives, Polly and Poily Ann (named after his sister Mary, called Polly ?) But further evidence may be forthcoming, If we can trace the oth- er first settlers to this aource.

Pomeroy Jones in "Annais of Onei- da County" says "A part of Scriba's Patent known as the "6000 acre tract in township No. 1 and a part of the 4000 acre tract in township No. 2 were sold to Donlel C. White, John W. Bloomfield, John Hall, George Huntington and others."

Who was this John Hall? Was he related"to Abijah? Was that why Abijah came to Lee? Where did he John, and his group hail from?

(D) Abijah and Amity Hali are buried in the Hall cemetery near Lee Center In the Town of Lee. There are only 10 other marked graves in this little cemetery. Among them is the grave of John Hall, died Nov. 10, 1879 and his wife Prudence who died In 1868. John was aged 92-8-12. It does not seem possible that this could have been the original settler, John. If he was a son of John, the settler, why was he burled in the same piot with Abijah Hall and his family? If we could trace this relationship, it might uncover the lost trail to Lee of Abijah and confirm' his place in the family of Nathan (4) Pre- served (3', Benjamin, (2) Edward (1) Hall.

WARD

Dr. Elijah 7 Ward (Benjamin 6. John 5, William 4 and 3, Obadiah 2, William 1) was born in Washing- ton county, N. Y. in 1789 and prac- ticed medicine in Lee, Oneida Co., N. Y. Where did he study medicine ?

Tradition says he lived in the West Indies for a time and possibly prac- ticed there. Is there any proof ?

His first child was born in Danby, Vt. in 1811 and was named Emily. She married Hosea Cornish of Lee, N. Y. or thereabouts., Her sister Mary Ann, married Franklyn Young. Was Emily Vaughn (or Vaughan) the mother of these two girls? If so her data Is requested.

Dr. Ward married 2nd Harriet Hall of Le Center, N. Y. and they had Alfred, Rhoda, John, Jay, Eliza, Smith, Clark and Harriet.

Dr. Ward dicd in Buffalo, N. Y. April 19, 1868 and was buried in Spencerport where he had been liv- ing with his son Jay.
