bacco." Written in the depression year of 1820, it was aimed to help in the passage of a protective tariff. Likewise, annual reports may give accounts of controversial matters. The Fourth Annual Report of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Rallroad Company, for 1857 tells of a controversy over methods of fin- ance.
Certain kinds of business historical material are fairly scarce in existnng collections. In particular, records of the following kinds of businesses are needed: banks, elevators, mills, printing companies, general stores, mail order houses, . department stores, warehouses, credit houses, produce and commodity exxchanges, wholesalers, importers, exporters, brokers, selling agents, jobbers and commission dealers. Information is also needed on service occupations, such as hotels, restaurants, beauty and barber shops, gasoline stations, garages and saloons. Plantation re- conds and farm diaries and account books are not well represented in present collections, but sufficient /Aug. 14, 1803.
material on all of these can probably be found by the earnest seeker. Mine records need to be observed. Trans- portation material, such as the re- cords of bus, taxicab and trucking companles, Is scarce and offers a field scarcely touched by Investiga- tors. Railroads and canals have been better chronicled. The list of' possi- bilities is far from exhausted; many opportunities await the local histor- ian of business.

In Utica, Oneida Co., N. Y., Deed Book No. 29, page 303, under date of Feb. 5, 1811, I find "John Billing- ton and Mercy his wife of Verona, Oneida Co., N. Y." sold to "David Pratt, Jr., of the same place" land in Verona, Oneida Co., N. Y. on the late Oneida Reservation. Peter Whe- lan and Ollve Whelan witnessed John Billington's signature and the signature of Mercy Billington was witnessed by John Wescot.
Peter and Olive Whelan belonged to our branch of the Whelan family. Peter was brother of Eli Whelan who died April 18, 1814 In Murry, Gen- esee Co., N. Y. John Billington was surety on the bond of Eli's widow, Desire in the settlement of the es- tate, as stated below. They seem to have all lived near each other in both Oneida and Genesee counties, and their children lived near each other in Lenawee Co., Mich.
Unfortunately , I did not : find when John Billington bought this and in Verona. I suspect I should have looked in the records at Albany, but did not think of it until the op- portunity had passed. Perhaps I may have an opportunity later to search the records there, and perhaps find mentioned the place he was living at the time of the purchase.
In the Surrogate Office at Batavia, Genesee Co., N. Y., are the papers dealing with the settlement of the estate of Eli Whelan who died April 18, 1814, in Murry, Genesee Co., N. Y., leaving ten children, as stated Fort on the first page of this treatise. The widow, Wesire, and Abel Bald- win were appointed administrators. John Billington and Simeon Daggett

By Mrs. Hoyt E. Whelan 601 W. Chicago Blvd. Tecumseh, Mich.

There were Washburns, Wrights, Eliys, a Canedys, Aldens, Allen, Cuchmans, Eatons, many Pratts, Raymonds, Warrens, Washburns, some Simmons, and a great many Woods who were members of this church. All these families are con- nected with Billingtons.
In the History of Quaboag, alias Brookfield, Mass., by Lyman Whit- ing, D. D., pub. in 1869, on page 39, I find:
"Rev. Mr. Cordley, 1859-1862 pas- tor of the church, prepared and published a complete catalogue of the members of this church, with an alphabetical index, from the year 1758 to 1861, embracing the entire period concerning which we have anything that can be called records. By the aid of this catalogue we can easily find out the full name of al- most every person who has united with this church, whether by pro- fession or by letter, during the last hundred years, when and whence each was received, and when and dismissed, together with dates of
marriages and deaths."
Chas. A. Fiagg's 'Guide to Mass." Local History states that one of these (books should be found in the North Brookfield Free Public Li- brary, but I made a trip there in September, 1945 and they did not have it; however, the librarian said it might be in the church library in the Appleton Collection. I called upon the minister of the church, a very busy man, who said the library was not catalogued and it would require some time to find the book, but he would make a search for it. .
If a copy of this could be found It should give some information on John Billington who married Lurena Horton there in 1784.
