Mecklenburg was formed from Lunenburg in 1764 and the county organized on March 11, 1765. It borders on Warren, Vance and Gran- ville counties in North Carolina, and Halifax, Charlotte, Lunenburg and Brunswick counties in Virginia. The Meherrin river skirts its northern border, whilst the Dan and Staunton unite in its limits at Clarksville and form the Roanoke, which runs through its south- ern limits. Many fine creeks-branches of these rivers-stretch across the county north and south. These streams abound with fish. The "red horse" and Jack, being only found in tributaries of the Albemarle sounds, are pronounced as the finest fresh-water fish for the table, and furnish the finest of sport to anglers. It is rare that either of these spe- cies are found to weigh more than ten pounds.
A great variety of game are numerous. Here perhaps the wild turkey, partridge and deer are as plentiful as anywhere in the South; while the hare, squirrel, opossum, coon. fox. otter, braver and groundhog furnish food and sport for the hunter and furs for the trapper. The wild goose and duck are still found here during the fall and winter.
In many localities of the county mineral waters have been found, and some of great value. The very earth seems pregnant with flowing undercurrents of health-giving waters, which burst forth from their hidden sources to gratify the thirst and give relief and brighten the life of afflicted humanity. Amongst the most noted of these are the cele- brated Buffalo Lithia Springs, whose waters are sold and shipped all over this county and to Europe and used for their potential health- producing and medicinal properties, and the Mecklenburg Mineral Springs, noted for their lithia and Chloride Calcium waters, adapted to a wide range of diseases.
The county being equidistant from the At- lantic coast and the Blue Ridge mountains, escapes the cold winds of the one and the miasmatic influence of the other. The alti- tude above sea level will average about 500 feet. The atmosphere is salubrious, seasons uniform. The summers are not oppressively warm, nor no long duration of excessive cold weather during the winters. Tornadoes and cyclones are unknown here.
The soil is varied, being red, gray and sandy. and when worn out by injudicious cultivation are easily restored, as it is highly susceptible of improvement. The finest bright tobacco

is raised here, also cotton and peanuts, for money crops, and all grains, clovers and grasses.
Boydton, Clarksville, Chase City, South Hill and Lacrosse are in the county and are all fine towns, with populations ranging rom 400 to 2,000. The Norfolk division of the Southern Railway traverses the county a distance of forty-six miles from east to west. The Richmond and Mecklenburg and Clarks- ville and Durham branches of the South- ern Railway runs through the western section of the county and the Seaboard Air Line through the eastern section. The popu- lation of the county has increased more rap- idly during the past fifteen years than at any time during its history.
