County Seat-Stafford.
Stafford lies on the Potomac river, and was formed from Westmoreland in 1675. It is bounded on the north by Prince William, on the west by Fauquier and Culpeper, and on the south of Spotsylvania, from which latter county it is separated by the Rappahannock river. The surface is generally rolling and the soil naturally good, yielding splendid re- turns with fair treatment. Corn, oats and wheat are raised in paying quantities, and the garden and orchard products are large and valuable. The eastern border is indented for its entire length by numerous creeks, which irrigate and drain the eastern and middle parts, and are navigable to consider- able length and contain great quantity and variety of fish that form an important article in the food supply of the county and branch of industry of the people. They also fur- nish most excellent power for mills and machinery. Copowamsic, the principal of these crecks, forms the boundary between this and Prince William county. The Rich- mond, Fredericksburg and Potomac railroad traverses the county north and south on line of and near the Potomac river. Gold, iron, lead, limestone and marble are found in con- siderable quantities.

This county lies on the south side of the James river, between Prince George on the west and Isle of Wight on the south and east. It was formed from James City county in 1652. The Blackwater river skirts the southwestern part for a considerable distance, separating it from Sussex.
Formerly this county contained some of the richest estates in Virginia bordering on the James. The farns are being gradually im- proved and rapidly recovering their ante- bellum fertility and productiveness, and this section may be said to be as prosperous as that of any in the State. The Norfolk and Western railroad extends through Sussex very near and on the line with the entire south- western border. Large quantities of peanuts are raised annually and the lands adapted to their growth are rapidly increasing in value. The narrow guage of the Southern Railway crosses the county from north to south, the terminus being Claremont on James river, and the Surry, Sussex and Southampton Rail- way, another narrow guage line, crosses the county in the same direction, the terminus being Scotland on the same river. The county roads are being gradually improved and com- pare favorably with any dirt roads in the State.
