This county was formed in 1839 from Mont- gomery and Wythe, and named in honor of the Count Pulaski, a hero of the Revolution. This is one of the rich counties of the far- famed Southwest Virginia. It lies in the val- ley formed by the Walkers and Poplar Camp mountains, and has for its boundaries the counties of Montgomery on the east and Wythe on the west.
The lands are very productive, and yield large crops of corn, wheat, oats, rye, etc. The soil is also well adapted to the growth of the domestic grasses, and the raising of fat cattle for the eastern and foreign markets is extensively carried on. Sheep-raising is largely conducted and mills are in operation for the manufacture of woolen goods, which find ready sale.
New river traverses the southern portion of the county, and skirts its northwestern bound- ary.
The main stem of the Norfolk and West- ern railroad traverses the county from north- east to northwest, and the New River branch of the same road extends north, following the course of the New river and opening up a rich mineral section. Iron, coal, zinc and lead abound and there are several mines and fur- naces in operation.

The county was formed from Culpeper in 1831, and lies at the eastern base of the Blue Ridge mountains, which divide it from War- ren and Page counties. Fauquier is on the northeast, Culpeper on the southeast, and Madison on the southwest. It is well watered by the headwaters of the North fork of Rap- pahannock river, which furnishes most excel- lent mill power. The lands are generally fer- tile and produce good crops wheat, corn, oats, tobacco, rye and buckwheat, and all kinds of fruit, for which latter both soil and climate are especially adapted. There is a large quantity of fine grazing lands in this county, and a great number of fine fat cattle, sheep and hogs are annually shipped to the eastern markets. There are large tracts of timber land along the Blue Ridge line, the owners of which await only a better means of trans- portation that now available te cut it. It is said there are various kinds of minerals, but they are as yet undeveloped. Magnetic iron ore of fine quality has been recently discov- ered, and there is mineral water, which is of certain benefit in all cases of dyspepsia and kindred diseases. Apple growing has reached the most profitably industry in this county. Hundreds of thousands of barrels of apples are grown, and with the improved system of marketing, owing to macadam roads and auto trucks, the industry has become highly profitable. Apples grown in this county have frequently received the highest prices paid on the foreign markets, owing to the ex- cellent flavor of the fruit. There are now about twenty miles of new macadam roads in the county, just constructed, running from the center of the county to Front Royal, the nearest railroad station; a local corporation operates a line of automobile trucks, both freight and passenger, making two round trips a day; the railroad may now be reached within an hour from the central parts of the county, and by traveling in as much com- fort as in a railway passenger coach.
