County Seat-Williamsburg.
James City county is located between the York and James rivers, and was one of the original shires. New Kent is on the north, Surry on the south. York and Warwick on the east, and Charles City on the west. It was the first county settled (at Jamestown. 1607) by the English in this State, and was formerly possessed of great wealth. The Chesapeake and Ohio Railway passes through its centre from east to west, bringing it into convenient and quick communication with oth- er sections. The products of the county are corn, oats, fruit and vegetables. The oyster, crab, shad, herring and sturgeon fisheries give employment to a number of men and are im- portant articles of food.

County Seat-King George.
King George was formed in 1720 from Rich- mond, and lies between the Potomac, which divides it from the State of Maryland on the northeast, and the Rappahannock river, which forms the boundary between it and Caroline county on the south: Westmoreland county is on the east and Stafford on the west. The lands are generally good. especially those on the rivers. and corn, oats, tobacco and wheat are raised in considerable quan- tities. The dairy, orchard and garden pro- ducts yield and pay well. The Potomac and Rappahannock rivers run on the northern and southern borders. These rivers, on which there are regular lines of steamers and many sailing vessels, and their several navigable creeks, afford ready and economical means of access to the markets of Fredericksburg via the Rappahannock and Alexandria, Wash- ington, Baltimore and the North via the Poto- mac river. A telephone line is in operation, running from Fredericksburg
through the county.
