County Seat-Tazewell.
This county was formed in 1799 from Rus- sell and Wythe and is one of the extreme Southwestern counties, lying on the borders of West Virginia, in the Appalachain chain of mountains. The surface is very mountain- ous, and while its soil is exceedingly fertile, but comparatively a small area is adapted or given to the raising of cereals, the principal of which are corn, wheat and oats. Like other counties in this section of the State it is very productive in grasses, especially the blue grass, and the grazing of cattle, sheep and horses comprises one of the main sources of revenue to the inhabitants.
