Middlesex, in tidewater Virginia was formed from Lancaster in 1672. It lies between the Rappahannock and Piankatank rivers, with the Chesapeake bay on the east, and is 35 miles long, with an average width of 6 miles. The lands are very fertile and are being rapidly improved. Crops of corn, wheat, oats and hay are raised in many parts of the county in great quantity, some farms produc- ing as much clover hay per bore as any in the State. Oysters and fish abound, the trade in them being very large. There is daily com- munication by steamers with Paltimore, Fred- ericsburg and Norfolk, and daily mails to ev- ery portion of the county. Telephone lines connect with West Point. In the lower part of the county the trucking business is large and profitable. A large percentage of the roads have been improved under the direc- tion of the State Highway Commissioner and this county has some of the best sand-play roads in the State.
