Northumberland county, which
no was doubt formed from York, is first mentioned in Acts of Assembly, 1645, and represented that year by John Matrum. It must, there- fore, have been formed during or before 1645. The county lies on the Chesapeake Bay, at the mouth of the Potomac river. Richmond, Westmoreland and Lancaster counties are on the west. The industries of the county, though principally agricultural, are more varied than in less favored locali- ties. Its bay and river coastline of forty miles, besides the inland river and creeks. many of whom are navigable for some dis- tance from their mouths, offer unparalleled facilities for commerce, fishing, oystering and the shooting of geese and other aquatic birds. Its timber lands annually yield vast quan- tities of cord wood, railroad ties, ship timber, wharf piles, hoop poles, etc .; while the cul- tivated portions yield fine harvests of wheat, corn, oats, rye, buckwheat, sweet and Irish potatoes, with an abundance of garden vege- tables, and fruits of all kinds of the finest quality. The population is steadily increas- ing. The manufacture of oil, and a valuable fertilizer, commonly known as "chum," from the fish called alewives, though comparatively a new branch of industry in this section, has rapidly increased in value and importance since its introduction in 1874. Thousands of barrels of oil and tons of chum are annually manufactured and this fertilizer is extensively used by agriculturists in this and many of the adjoining counties, having, because of its cheapness, convenience and adaptability to the soil, to a great extent taken the place of the manipulated guanos heretofore in general use. The fishing and manufacturing seasons last from five to six months, and gives lucra- tive employment to from three hundred to four hundred men and from forty to fifty ves- sels.
