County Seat -- Yorktown.

This county was one of the original shires formed in 1634. It was originally Charles River county, but the name was changed to York in 1642. It lies on the south side of York river, a part of its northern boundary being the Chesapeake bay. James City, War- wick and Elizabeth City are the counties bor- dering on the southwest. The lands are gen- . erally of a good quality, and produce average crops of corn, wheat, oats, tobacco, etc. The waters of York abound in fine oysters, and the trade of this article of consumption is very extensive.

Yorktown, the county seat, is located at the mouth of York river, and is famous in his- tory as having been the closing scene of the struggle for American independence. The monument erected by the United States gov- ernment to commemorate the surrender of Cornwallis was completed in August, 1884, and is an imposing structure, 97 feet in height, with the crowning figure a woman 13 feet high. with arms extended, representing the Goddess of Peace. The faces of the base of the monument are adorned with the coats of arms of the United States and France and devices representing the products of the United States and suitable patriotic inscrip- tions. Above the base and around the be- ginning of the cylindical shafts are thirteen female figures, typifying the thirteen original colonies.
