1.366.
Area-Acres, 82,848; square miles, 124. County Seat-Lancaster.
Lancaster county was first mentioned in the Acts of Assembly with Gloucester and Surry in 1652, and must have been formed in that year from Northumberland county. It lies on the north side of the Rappahannock, which separates it from Middlesex county on the south; a portion of the eastern part of the county is bounded by the Chesapeake Bay. with Northumberland and Richmond counties on the north. The courthouse is situated in the northern part of the county and about eighty-three miles northeast of Richmond
The land produce fair average crops of corn. oats and wheat. The surface is rolling and well watered. Its continguity to navigable waters renders transportation cheap.

Lee was formed 1792 from Russell, and named in honor of Henry Lee, then Goy- ernor. It lies on the eastern slope of the Cumberland mountains at the extreme south- western angle of the State. The States of Kentucky and Tennessee bound it on the north and south and Scott and Wise counties on the east. The western part is very mountainous and the land unimproved, but the eastern and valley portions are quite fertile and produce good and abundant crops of corn, oats, rye and wheat and the grasses. Some tobacco of fine grade is also raised. The orchard and dairy yield handsome revenue. The county is well watered by the headwaters of Powells river, which also furnish a means for the trans- portation of grain and the forest product to market. The minerals found in this county are , iron (red and brown hematite) coal barytes and salt. The timbers are white oak much being the natural growth. and every variety of wood to be found in any other coun- ty in the State.
