This county was formed in 1692. It is situated on the eastern bank of the Rappa- hannock river sixty miles northeast from Rich- mond, five miles from the Potomac river, and about twenty miles from the mouth of the Rappahannock. Its low grounds are very fertile, producing fine crops of wheat, corn and tobacco. The upper lands, known in the county as "forest lands," are rolling, the soil being a sandy loam and susceptible of a high state of cultivation. The river along its front abounds in fine oysters and fish, the shad and herring fisheries being exceptionally productive and profitable.

This county was formed from Botetourt in 1838, and lies in the Roanoke Valley, the Blue Ridge forming its eastern boundary, with Botetourt on the northeast and Montgomery on the west, Floyd and Franklin on the south, Bedford on the east and Craig on the north- west. The soil is particularly adapted to the raising of corn, oats, wheat, rye. barley, hay, as well as vegetables and fruits of every de- scription. This county, in common with all the others in this section of the State, is famous for its fine pasturage. The Norfolk and West- orn and the Virginian railways pass through the county, furnishing transportation to all parts of the county. The mineral deposits, the chief of which is iron. are very valuable. The mineral springs, of which there are several, enjoy a high reputation for the medicinal properties of their waters.
