This county was formed in 1753 from Am- elia, and lies on the south bank of the Ap- pomattox river, which seperates it from Cum- berland and Buckingham counties. Charlotte and Lunenburg are on the south, Nottoway on the east, and Appomattox and Charlotte on the west. Its northern part is watered by the Appomatox and its branches, and its southern and middle parts by the Bush, Sandy, and other branches of the Meherrin river. The Southern railway crosses its southern angle and the Norfolk and Western extends through it east and west near its northern limits and the Virginian through the southern part of the county.
The surface is rolling and the lands are generally of good quality, and there are some very fine estates in the county. The princi- pal products are tobacco, corn, oats and wheat.

'This county was formed in 1732 from Charles City and is on the south bank of the James river which separates it from Charles City county. It is triangular in shape, and has for its bounds on the south and east Su- ex and Surry, and West Dinwiddie counties.
The lands of this county are generally thin, though there are extensive tracts of valuable alluvial lands. The products are principally wheat, corn, tobacco, peanuts, and some cot- ton.
The Norfolk and Western railway traverses the central and northwestern parts, which fur- nishes ample transportation facilities. Prince George is seven miles east of the city of Pe- tersburg. City Point, on the James at the mouth of the Appomattox, is of considerable commercial consequence. It was the place. during the war, where supplies were received by the Federal troops while engaged in their operations around Petersburg, and at this time the E. I. Dupont De Nemors Company has one of the largest powder plants in the world for the manufacture of gun cotton. It is es- timated that the population in and around City Point and the city of Hopewell amounts to about 25,000.
