Value of real estate, 1916 -- White. $2,510,- 795; colored, $395,475. Total, $2,906,270.
Value of personal property-White, $939,- 474; colored, $130,151. Total. $1.069,625. Income-$20,761.
Population, 1916-26.886.
Number voters-White. 1,655: colored, 2,- 446.
Area-Acres, 259,010; square miles, 417. County Seat-Suffolk.
Nansemond, first called Upper Norfolk, was formed in 1639 from the Isle of Wight. Its , name appeared in Acts of Assembly, March, 1645-'6, as Nansimum: in Acts of 1652 as Nanzemond. The name Upper Norfolk was resumed in 1657 and retained until 1661. when Nansemum and subsequently Nansemond was given it. It extends from Hampton Roads on the north to North Carolina line on the south. Norfolk county is on the east and Isle of Wight and Southampton on the west. The Nanse- mond river extends through and waters the middle and northern portions, and the Black- water and other tributaries of the Chowan water its southern and western parts. The surface is level and the lands on the rivers are of fine quality. A superior quality of marl in great abundance is found on the borders of the Dismal Swamp and along the rivers. About 65,000 acres of Dismal Swamp are in Nansemond county, of which a survey has been made with a view of draining and re- claiming the land. The productions are corn, oats. wheat, cotton and peanuts. Six lines of railroad traverse the county and are the source of much business prosperity and wealth. Many villages are springing up along the lines of the various railroads, adding to the popu- lation, wealth and business of the county. School facilities, both public and private, are excellent.
Various and sundry manufacturing interests are located and doing well. Of course lumber is the prevailing interest.
The town has electric lights, gas, water and sewerage and is an exceedingly healthy loca- tion.
The business part of the town is built up solid with brick buildings and the residences of Suffolk will compare favorably with any town in the State.
The town is now growing faster than at any period of its history, and on account of its net- work of railroads manufacturers are constant- ly looking over the surroundings with a view of locating.
