County Seat-Monterey.
Highland county was formed from Bath and Pendleton counties in 1847, and is situated on the western border of the State with Bath on the south and Augusta on the east the West Virginia line forming its northern and western boundaries. The county is but sparse- ly settled, as it is very mountainous; but there are fertile valleys between the moun- tains which produce sufficeint quantity of the staple products for home consumption, with some for market. Most of the fruit crops that can be grown in this latitude may be profitably cultivated by proper attention. The grazing quality of the land can hardly be surpassed by any county in the State while the mountains furnish ample range for young stock during the summer seasons. Iron, coal and marble are the principal minerals.

Isle of Wight is an original shire, estab- lished in 1634, and extends from the James river, its northern boundary, to within eight miles of the North Carolina line. The Black- water river skirts its entire western border, separating it from Southampton county. Sur- ry county is on the north and Nansemond on the cast. The Seaboard Air Line, the South- ern and the Virginian railroads traverse the southern and the Norfolk and Western its central part from east to west. The soil is generally sandy and thin. Corn, oats, pea- nuts and cotton are the chief products. The fisheries give employment to a small portion of the population.
