County Seat-Lovingston.
This county was established in 180£ from Amherst. The James river skirts its north- eastern border, separating it from Bucking- ham, and the Blue Ridge mountains bound it on the west, dividing it from Augusta and Rockbridge counties. Its other border coun- ties are: Albemarle on the northeast, Am- herst on the southwest, and Appomattox di- rectly south. The Tve, Ruckers, Run, Rock- fish and other rivers, tributaries of the James. extend through and water the county. The Chesapeake and Ohio and Southern railways and Virginia Blue Ridge Railway pass through the county. The lands are very productive, and yield fine crops of buckwheat, corn, rye. oats, wheat, corn, rye, oats, wheat and the grasses, and apples of the best quality. The mountain lands furnish fine pasturage, and horses, cattle and sheep are raised here in large numbers for market. The minerals are iron (red hemite and magnetic), copper, lead, manganese, asbestos, kaolin and soapstone. The timbers are pine, oak, hickory, walnut, chestnut, maple and dogwood.
